My Own Private Alaska (also known as MOPA) is a French screamo band formed in 2007, in Toulouse, France.[1] Their original lineup consisted of Matthieu Miegeville (vocals), Tristan Mocquet (piano, keyboards), and Yohan Hennequin (drums, percussion). Following a 2014 hiatus, they reunited in 2020 with Miegeville and Mocquet, alongside new members Jordi Pujol (drums, percussion) and Laure Muller-Feuga (bass, synth bass).[2] The band is known for lacking traditional guitars and basses.[3]

The band released a self-titled EP on June 1, 2007, as a self-released CDr.[4] It was later re-released by IML in 2008 and Division Records in 2009.[5] The EP featured six tracks, titled "Die For Me (If I Say Please)", "Page of a Dictionary", "Ego Zero", "Kill Me Twice", "I Am an Island", and "First Steps".[6] Most of the tracks were included on Amen, although "Ego Zero" was excluded from the track list.[7] "First Steps" was later renamed to "Ode to Silence".

After releasing their self-titled EP, record producer Ross Robinson discovered them in 2008 through the platform Myspace.[8] The band and Robinson collaborated in their first studio album Amen,[7] which was released on March 1 2010.[7] After a year, the band released an EP titled "A Red Square Sun," (also known as The Red Sessions) on April 5,[9] which consisted of the tracks "Red", "Speak to Me", and "There Will Be No One".

History

[edit]

Early years, formation, and My Own Private Alaska (2007–2008)

[edit]

My Own Private Alaska was formed in 2007 in Toulouse, France, by vocalist Matthieu Miegeville, pianist Tristan Mocquet, and drummer Yohan Hennequin. They received recognition for lacking traditional electric rock guitars and bass, with instead using acoustic pianos and drums. The band also uses screaming vocals, which are chiefly incorporated in their tracks.[10]

Following the release of their self-titled EP in June 2007, the band signed with IML in 2008 and Division Records in 2009.[4] In September 2008, the band was included on a European concert tour alongside American post-hardcore band Will Haven.

Amen (2009–2011)

[edit]

In 2008, American record producer Ross Robinson discovered and friended My Own Private Alaska through the social networking platform MySpace.[8] Robinson was interested with the mixture of screaming vocals and classical pianos,[8] which had him directly contact them.

On July 7, 2009, My Own Private Alaska performed as an opening act for Metallica and Mass Hysteria at the Arènes de Nîmes amphitheater in France.[11] Following this performance, they collaborated with Robinson.[12] The band traveled to Los Angeles to record their debut studio album, Amen, which was released on March 1, 2010, through Robinson's label, I Am Recordings.[7]

Hiatus (2014–2020)

[edit]

In August 2014, My Own Private Alaska announced via social media that they were going on a hiatus, thanking fans for their support.[3] The band went on an indefinite hiatus as band members focused on their personal lives and off-shoot bands. During this period, Yohan Hennequin was working with the French pop duo Cats on Trees,[13] which had received commercial success in France during the early 2010s.[13] The band remained inactive until early 2020, when Miegeville and Mocquet reunited.[2]
