Mower Minions is an 2016 American animated short film directed by Bruno Chauffard and Glenn McCoy, who co-wrote the script with story supervisor Dave Rosenbaum. Produced by Illumination Entertainment, the short follows the Minions trying to earn money to buy a banana smoothie machine by mowing a lawn from an elderly home.[4]
It was the first Despicable Me short film to be released in theaters on July 8, 2016 along with The Secret Life of Pets and later on DVD and Blu-Ray alongside the same film on December 6, by Universal Pictures.[1][2]
Plot
[edit]Watching a commercial about a blender that makes banana smoothies, five Minions want to buy one on TV but they’re low on cash from their Piggy Bank. However, inspired by Larry's Gardening Service, the Minions decide to open their own lawn business when taking his equipment, in order to raise up to $19.95 to pay for the blender on TV. Going to a retirement home called Fuzzy Memories, the Minions were hired by the elders to mow their lawn. However their antics to mow the lawn become chaotic, but later amuse the elders to give them a bottle of 2,000 pennies for cheering them up. Once they payed for the blender, the Minions become too stuffed after after they ate too many banana smoothies, that they saw a new blender commercial on TV being cost $142.95, which the Minions want to go for it again.

Production
[edit]During the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, producer and CEO of Illumination Entertainment, Chris Meledandri announced that their next film, The Secret Life of Pets, will freature a never before seen short film with the Minions from their franchise Despicable Me to prep up for the film’s sequel Despicable Me 3 in June 2017.[5][6]
Release
[edit]The short was promoted to be release in theaters on July 8, 2026 during The Secret Life of Pets.[7] It was later release on DVD by December 6, as a bonus freature alongside two original shorts from the film: Norman Television and Weenie.[2] Later in November 8, 2022, the short was later part of an anthology of Illumination short films, Minions & More 2, which was released only on Netflix.[8]
Reception
[edit]During a Variety review on The Secret Life of Pets, Mower Minions earned the film's first laugh til after the short film, one of the dogs, Mel, wears a Minions costume which was one of the ideas from director Chris Renaud upon seeing someone put one for a bulldog.[3][9]
