Moshe Edri (born 3 April 1962) is an Israeli retired Tat aluf (brigadier general) and civil servant who has served as director general of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) since 1 August 2022.[1] During a 31-year career in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), he served in the Golani Brigade and later in the Israeli Air Force, including as commander of Unit 669 and of the Air Force special forces.[2] From October 2023 to August 2024, while continuing to lead the IAEC, he served as the founding head of the Tkuma Directorate, established to coordinate the rehabilitation and development of communities affected by the 7 October 2023 attack.[3][4]

Early life and education

[edit]

Edri was born on 3 April 1962 in Nazareth Illit , now Nof HaGalil, and attended the Nir HaEmek youth village.[5] He earned a bachelor's degree in Middle Eastern and African studies from the University of Haifa and a master's degree in public policy from Bar-Ilan University.[2]

Military career

[edit]

After completing school, Edri enlisted in the Golani Brigade. He completed non-commissioned officer and infantry officer training, fought in the 1982 Lebanon War, and later commanded a company in Battalion 17 at the IDF squad commanders' school.[5]

In September 1984, during a training exercise in the Golan Heights, Edri was seriously injured in an explosives accident and lost his left hand. He was evacuated by Unit 669 and, following treatment and rehabilitation, returned to military service.[5]

After returning to service, Edri headed a combat-doctrine section in the IDF's infantry and paratroopers headquarters and later served as operations officer of Unit 669. In 1990 he became deputy commander of the unit, a position he held for two years. He subsequently commanded the preparatory phase of the Israeli Air Force flight course and headed the training branch of the Air Force special forces command. In 1998 he was appointed commander of Unit 669. He later commanded the Air Force special forces and an Israeli Air Force base.[5]

Edri served in the IDF for 31 years. Among his later positions was head of the General Staff Special Means Brigade. He retired from military service in 2011 with the rank of brigadier general.[2]

Civil service

[edit]

Ministry of Defense

[edit]

Following his retirement from the IDF, Edri spent approximately three and a half years in a senior position at the Israel Atomic Energy Commission. In 2015 he assumed positions in the Ministry of Defense as director of special means and director for civil defense.[2] During the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel, his civil-defense portfolio included coordinating and leading aspects of the government's national response.[2][5]

Israel Atomic Energy Commission

[edit]

In December 2021, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced Edri's appointment as the next director general of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, succeeding Ze'ev Snir.[6] Edri took office on 1 August 2022.[1]

As director general, Edri has represented Israel at meetings of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The IAEA's published statement for Israel at its 68th General Conference in September 2024 identifies him as director general of the IAEC.[7] He remained in the post as of the IAEA's 70th General Conference in September 2026.[8]

Tkuma Directorate

[edit]

On 19 October 2023, following the 7 October attack, the Israeli government established the Tkuma Directorate and appointed Edri as its first head. He served in the position concurrently with his role as director general of the IAEC.[3] The directorate was tasked with leading the national effort to rehabilitate and develop the affected communities in the western Negev and to provide measures intended to restore normal life in the region.[9]

Edri served as head of the directorate until 4 August 2024, after which he returned full-time to his position at the IAEC.[4]
