Moore Student Radio is the official student-run internet radio station of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in Liverpool, England.[1] Established in September 2024, the station broadcasts continuously online, with live music, entertainment and speech programmes produced and presented by LJMU students.[2] It is a member of the Student Radio Association (SRA).[2]
In its first two academic years, the station received recognition from John Moores Students' Union and the SRA's Amplify Awards. Its presenters have also appeared on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Newsbeat, and have taken part in collaborative broadcasts and fundraising projects with other university radio stations.
History
[edit]Moore Student Radio was founded in September 2024 as a student-led station serving the LJMU community.[2] During its first academic year, the station hosted an edition of the SRA Chart Show, staged a 24-hour broadcast called the "Mega Mo Marathon", and was named Society of the Year at the 2025 JMSU Society and Volunteering Awards.[2][3]
The station's first year also included its involvement with BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool and its first Student Radio Amplify Award. In its second year, the station expanded its collaborations with other university broadcasters, including Shock Radio at the University of Salford and four other stations involved in the Tour of the North project.[4]
Programming and operations
[edit]Moore Student Radio operates as an online service and broadcasts around the clock, combining automated music output with a schedule of live student programmes.[2][5] Its output includes breakfast and drivetime programmes, general music programming, specialist music shows, entertainment and speech-based programmes. Programmes are presented and produced by students, while the station's website provides a live player, programme schedule and links to archived shows.[5]
LJMU lists Moore Student Radio among the student-media opportunities available to journalism and sports journalism students, whilst also being available to all students. The university's journalism facilities include radio and podcast studios alongside newsrooms, editing suites and a television studio.[6][7]

Media appearances and events

[edit]In May 2025, six members of Moore Student Radio were invited to the BBC Radio 1 studio at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool. During the visit, presenter Greg James surprised the group with a video call from Miley Cyrus, in which the students interviewed the singer. The encounter was broadcast by BBC Radio 1 and was subsequently featured in a BBC News video.[11][12][13]
In the week preceding the event, the station interviewed Dan Haggis from the Liverpool band The Wombats.[13]
In February 2026, a BBC Newsbeat article by Naomi de Souza and Jordan Kenny featured interviews with station manager Jack Bostock and communications officer Darcy Davis about the cultural impact of the television series Hannah Montana, following the announcement of a twentieth-anniversary special.[14]
Foot in the Door
[edit]On 5 May 2026, Moore Student Radio broadcast from the Audio Academy's Foot in the Door Liverpool event at LJMU's Redmonds Building, including a live edition of The Moore Breakfast Show.[5][15] The event was aimed at people at entry and early-career level in the audio industry and included workshops, talks and a facilitated networking session. It was supported by BBC Sounds and Broadcast Bionics, with guests from the BBC, commercial radio, technology companies and independent audio production.[15]
Charitable activity
[edit]In November 2025, the station ran the month-long "Mega Mo" campaign in support of Movember. Its activities included a joint 34-mile (55 km) walk from Salford to Liverpool with members of Shock Radio, live broadcasts and a fundraising event. The campaign raised £3,169.[9] The campaign later received the SRA's 2026 Amplify Award for Best Fundraising Initiative.[16]
Awards
[edit]Moore Student Radio was named Society of the Year at the 2025 JMSU Society and Volunteering Awards.[3] It was also nominated in two categories at the 2025 Student Radio Amplify Awards, winning the award for Most Supportive University or Students' Union.[8][17] In 2026, the station received JMSU's Social Media Stars of the Year and Event of the Year awards, the latter for the Moore Than a Marathon challenge. The station and collaborative projects involving its members also received eight Amplify Awards.[18][16][4]

Tour of the North was a collaboration with Jam Radio, Leeds Student Radio, Purple Radio and University Radio York. The Student Radio Resilience Award and the other named 2026 projects involved collaborations with Shock Radio.[4]
