Momentum Cyber is an American investment bank and advisory firm that focuses on the cybersecurity industry.[1] It advises cybersecurity companies, entrepreneurs, boards of directors, investors and strategic acquirers on mergers and acquisitions.[2] The firm also publishes research on cybersecurity dealmaking, including a periodic Cybersecurity Almanac and a market map of the sector.[3][4] Momentum Cyber launched under that name in January 2018, having previously operated as Momentum Partners.[5] The firm was originally based in San Francisco and is now headquartered in Austin, Texas.[6][7]

History

[edit]

Momentum Cyber launched in January 2018 as a cybersecurity-focused advisory business, succeeding the technology advisory firm Momentum Partners.[8] At the time of its launch the firm was based in San Francisco, and Michael Tedesco and Eric McAlpine served as managing partners.[2] CRN reported that the business would advise cybersecurity companies, entrepreneurs, boards of directors, investors and strategic acquirers, and described it as concentrating exclusively on the cybersecurity sector rather than covering technology broadly.[2]

The firm appointed the cybersecurity executive Dave DeWalt, a former chief executive of McAfee, as chairman at launch.[9] In March 2021, the firm announced the promotion of two senior advisers, Dino Boukouris and Keith Skirbe, to managing director, citing what it described as record firm performance and transaction activity going into 2021.[10] Momentum Cyber is led by McAlpine as chief executive.[11]

Transactions on which the firm has acted as an adviser[12] include the February 2021 acquisition of a majority stake in Herjavec Group by funds advised by Apax, in which Momentum Cyber served as financial adviser to Herjavec Group.[13] Also include the acquisition of Alcide by Rapid7,[14] and the acquisition of JASK by Sumo Logic.[15]

Publications

[edit]

Momentum Cyber publishes research on cybersecurity mergers, acquisitions and financing that is regularly cited by industry and business press.[16][17][18] Its publications include the Cybersecurity Almanac, periodic Cybersecurity Market Review reports on transaction and investment activity, and CYBERscape, a market map that groups cybersecurity companies by sub-sector.[19][20]

Momentum Cyber's data has also been used by other outlets to track first-half-year cybersecurity dealmaking; in July 2026, both Axios and The Wall Street Journal cited the firm's mid-year review in reporting on 2026 merger and acquisition activity in the sector.[21][22]
