Mill is a Norwegian brand of electric heating and indoor climate products. The brand is operated by Mill International AS, a Norwegian company headquartered in Østerås, Bærum. The company develops and markets panel heaters, portable heaters, and other products for heating and indoor climate control.[1]
History
[edit]The company was established in 1992 under the name Novaplan AS. From its inception, the company operated in the heating products sector, including oil-filled radiators.[2]
Philip Bryn-Haugland joined the family business in 2010 and worked with his father, Cato Bryn, on developing the company's own brand and heating products. The first product marketed under the Mill name was the Mill Glass glass-fronted heater, which was launched in 2012.[2]
In December 2014, the company changed its name from Novaplan AS to Mill International AS. According to the company, the name change reflected the fact that Mill products had by then come to represent the majority of its product portfolio.[2]
The company subsequently expanded its international distribution. In 2017, Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Næringsliv reported that Mill sold heating products in 27 countries and that the company had exceeded NOK 100 million in annual revenue the previous year.[3]
Products and technology
[edit]Mill develops products for electric heating and indoor climate control. Its product range includes panel heaters, portable heaters, oil-filled radiators, fan heaters, heat pumps, and products for monitoring and regulating indoor climate.
Several of the company's heaters can be connected to the internet and controlled through the Mill app. The app allows users to schedule temperatures according to the time of day and adjust the temperature when a home is unoccupied. Some models also support integration with third-party smart home platforms.
Mill's WiFi panel heaters use a PID-based control system (proportional–integral–derivative control). Unlike a conventional thermostat that regulates temperature by switching the heating element fully on and off, PID control can vary the power output in order to maintain the room temperature closer to the desired setpoint.
In a simulation study conducted at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the energy consumption of Mill's scheduled PID control system was compared with conventional on/off control. The study simulated a 600-watt Mill WiFi panel heater in both well-insulated homes built to the Norwegian TEK10 standard and older, less well-insulated Norwegian homes, at outdoor temperatures of −7, 0, and 7 °C.[4]
The simulation showed a 29.1 percent reduction in estimated energy consumption at an outdoor temperature of −7 °C.[4]
The researchers concluded that the scheduled PID control system provided more stable temperature control and had the greatest potential for energy savings under conditions with high heating demand.[4]
In a comparative review of smart panel heaters published by Tek.no, the Mill Invisible was named the best product in the test. The review included panel heaters from seven suppliers and assessed factors including setup, ease of use, weekly scheduling, third-party integrations, and other smart features.[5]
In 2023, the company launched its first heat pumps. They were developed to integrate with other products in Mill's app-based heating system.[6]
Design
[edit]Product design has been part of Mill's brand profile since the launch of the brand. The company's first internally developed product range included panel heaters with fronts made from materials including glass and steel.[2]
In 2017, Dagens Næringsliv reported on Mill's work in industrial design and the company's collaboration with designer Bård Eker.[7]
Company
[edit]Mill International AS has the Norwegian organisation number 965 423 664 and its registered business address is in Grini Næringspark in Østerås, Bærum. The company is registered under the industry classification "wholesale of hardware, plumbing and heating equipment".[1]
Andreas Krona is registered as the company's chief executive officer.[8]
