Michelle Deignan
[edit]Michelle Deignan (born 1970) is an Irish artist, film-maker and academic based in London.
Early life and education
[edit]Deignan was born in Dublin. She was educated at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Goldsmiths, University of London and the University for the Creative Arts Farnham.
Work
[edit]Deignan makes moving image, photographic and print works, for exhibition and screening contexts[1]. She is particularly concerned with non-mainstream experiences of land, place and identity[2]. Her films often feature "the triumphs and failures of protagonists struggling to be seen, remembered or heard as they fight for agency."[3]
She presents her work both through exhibitions and screenings. Her solo exhibiton Alternating Routes[4] was the Tromsø International Film Festival's 2024 festival exhibition.[5]
Deignan also works as a film editor. Originally working in broadcast TV[6] she moved to editing artists’ films and independent documentaries. She has worked on films by: Ursula Mayer[7], Axel Strachnoy[8], Jasmina Cibic[9] and others.
In 2013 Deignan directed the documentary feature film, Breaking Ground: the Story of the London Irish Women’s Centre[10]. The following year she conceived and directed the official video for Skydive[11], the debut single by the UK band Astronauts.
From 2020 to 2022 Deignan was chair of the board of the cultural organisation Irish Film London (now Irish Film and Television UK). [12]
Academia
[edit]Deignan is a doctoral researcher at University of the Creative Arts.[13]
She is lead tutor for Documentary Short Courses and Experimental Film tutor for BA Filmmaking, at the MET Film School London[14]. She has also taught at NCAD Dublin, University of Sussex, Duncan of Jordanstone College, Winchester School of Art, the Ruskin School Oxford and the University of Greenwich.[13]
