Michele Kalina is an American serial killer, who secretly gave birth to five babies over the course of 15 years, before immediately killing them.[1] She would then conceal the babies bodies in containers before placing them in her closet. The nature of her crimes weren’t revealed until her teenaged daughter discovered the skeletal remains of the babies, when she went to clean the closet. Kalina only confessed to one of the babies deaths, but DNA test results showed that at least four out of the five babies were born at or near term, then killed in a manner consistent with asphyxia, poisoning or neglect.[2]
Background
[edit]Michele Kalina was born on June 14, 1966. Michele attended Albright College and in 1986 for three semester before she married Jeffery Kalina at 19. The couple would have two children together, Andrew and later Elizabeth. Andrew was born with Cerebral palsey and Michele took care of him for seven years, before Jeffery took up the roll after he was laid off work. Andrew would die of natural causes in 2000.[3] She was an at home nurse’s aide.[4]
Murders
[edit]From 1996 to 2010, she conceived six babies from her affair. Each time she would conceal the pregnancy saying they were cysts. Kalina would give an account saying they were all stillborn, but test results showed that four of the babies were killed by either posion, neglect, or asphyxiation. In between the murders in 2003, she gave up one baby for adoption - Her husband did not know of this.[5] She would move the babies bodies from the shed she kept them in at her old house, and moved them into the family’s new apartment’s closet.[6]
Discovery
[edit]On July 29, 2010, Michele’s daughter curiosity got the best of her, and decided to look in the closet, only to discover the skeletal remains of four babies in containers as well as one being encased in cement. She called the authorities around 5:00 A:M the same day.[6] Michele fled the same day an investigation went on saying to her husband: "I don't know where to go." "I can't find peace there." "I can't find peace anymore." "I'm concerned I'm being framed." She was found days later on a street. Another set of baby remains were found at the dump, after Kalina’s husband and daughter mistakenly threw the baby out.[7][8]
Legal Proceedings
[edit]Michele entered a not guilty plea initially to the charges against her.[9] She denied she killed the babies in interviews with her defense psychiatrist, saying they were “Stillborn” but later remembered that one of the babies moved. That baby - a boy was the sole murder conviction she got, as well as being convicted of five counts of abuse of a corpse and concealing a child's death.[10] She was asked for leniency due to her defender claiming she suffered from depression and learned to deny the murders due to suffering from abuse in her childhood. The judge rejected this, saying she treated the babies like garbage and that Kalina could have asked for help. She was sentenced to 20-40 years in prison.[11] She is currently incarcerated at the Muncy State Correctional Institution.
