Michael May at the international FMplus Conference 2026 in Muenster, Germany

Michael May (born 22 September 1954) is a German mathematician and computer scientist. He is an emeritus professor of computer science and facility management at the HTW Berlin – University of Applied Sciences. His professional work has focused on mathematics, hydrodynamics, information technology, integrated workplace management, digitalization and related applications in facility management.

Education and academic career

[edit]

May was born on 22 September 1954 in Zerbst, East Germany. He studied mathematics at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg from 1972 to 1976.

From 1976 to 1981, he worked at the Central Institute for Mathematics and Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, now the Weierstrass Institute. There he received his doctorate in mathematics in 1981 for research in functional analysis related to multiphase flows in magnetohydrodynamics (Navier-Stokes und Maxwell's equations)

From 1982 to 1991, May worked at the Central Institute for Cybernetics and Information Processes in Berlin, where he established a research group concerned with computer aided schematics, now known as graph drawing. In 1990, he completed his habilitation with research on the automatic layout of network-like diagrams.

After working at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), May joined HTW Berlin in 1994 as a professor of applied computer science. From 2000 to 2020, his professorship focused on facility management and information technology.

Since 2021, May has worked as a senior researcher and research manager at the Society for the Advancement of Applied Computer Science (GFaI) in Berlin.

Research and professional activities

[edit]

May's early research and professional activities have focused particularly on functinal analysis, discrete mathematics and graph theory (crossing number), information technology and digitalization in facility management. His later work includes computer-aided facility management, integrated workplace management, information management, building information modeling, IT integration and related applications.

Within the German Facility Management Association gefma he founded a working group concerned with digitalization in facility management in 2001. The group developed guidelines dealing with IT in facility management, including definitions, concepts, interfaces, implementation models, data management, CAFM procurement and certification.[1]

May has also been involved in international cooperation in facility management. He served as a representative of GEFMA in international professional organizations including EuroFM and the International Facility Management Association (IFMA).

May has edited and contributed to a number of books and professional publications on information technology, facility management and BIM.

He is the editor of the CAFM-Handbuch[2], a German-language reference work on computer-aided facility management and digitalization. The fifth edition was published by Springer in 2025. The book covers CAFM, BIM, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, data management, IT integration, network facility management[3], energy management and other aspects of digitalization in facility management.

May was also one of the two editors, together with Geoff Williams, of The Facility Manager's Guide to Information Technology[4]. The edition was produced through a collaboration between the IT Community of IFMA and the Digitalization working group of gefma and involved more than 20 authors from the international facility management community. The book received the IFMA Distinguished Author Award in 2019. May and Geoff Williams were recognized for their work on the publication at the World Workplace conference in Phoenix.

Awards and honours

[edit]
  • 1989 – Leibniz Medal, awarded by the Academy of Sciences in Berlin in the silver class, for scientific achievements in mathematical methods of layout optimization.[5]
  • 2011 – Research Award, HTW Berlin.[6]
  • 2013 – Science Communication Award, HTW Berlin.[7]
  • 2019 – IFMA Distinguished Author Award, together with Geoff Williams, for The Facility Manager's Guide to Information Technology.[8]
  • 2025 – Appointment as EuroFM Ambassador to Germany.[9]
