Michael Manning (born c. 1981) is an Irish motorsport engineer who worked in Formula One between 2005 and 2025. He is best known for his tenure at Red Bull Racing, where he served as a trackside controls engineer for world champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.
Early life and education
[edit]Manning was raised in County Cork, Ireland.[1] He studied electronic engineering at Munster Technological University (then Cork Institute of Technology).
Career
[edit]Early career (2005–2011)
[edit]Manning entered Formula One in 2005, joining Jordan Grand Prix as a junior controls engineer. He remained with the Silverstone-based team through its successive transitions to Midland F1 Racing, Spyker F1, and Force India. In 2010, Manning moved to Team Lotus to serve as a senior control engineer during the team's inaugural seasons.
Red Bull Racing (2011–2025)
[edit]Manning joined Red Bull Racing in 2011. During his early tenure, he was part of the engineering group that supported Sebastian Vettel during his period of four consecutive Drivers' Championships (2010–2013) collecting the constructors throphy on behalf of the team in Belgium. [2]
Following Max Verstappen's promotion to the senior Red Bull team in 2016, Manning became his trackside control engineer.[3] [4] In this capacity, he was responsible for critical performance areas, including race start procedures and driveline control systems.[5] Manning remained a fixture of Verstappen's core trackside engineering team throughout the driver's dominant period in the early 2020s.[6]
Across his fifteen-season tenure with Red Bull, Manning was associated with a total of seven Drivers' Championship campaigns and five Constructors' Championships.[2][6]
Williams (2016–present)
[edit]In July 2026, Manning joined the Atlassian Williams F1 Team as Chief Engineer – Trackside Engineering, based at the team's Grove factory.[7] The appointment reunited him with Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz, both of whom he had previously worked alongside during their time at Red Bull.[8]
Announcing the move, Manning cited Williams' engineering heritage and the team's ambition to return to the front of the grid as key factors behind his decision, and noted the particular significance of joining ahead of the team's 50th anniversary.[7] His arrival at Williams was widely reported as part of a broader departure of senior Red Bull personnel following the end of the Verstappen-era dominance.[8]
