Michael Marlo Duque is a Filipino-British independent nurse practitioner, author, and community leader based in London.[1] He is best known as the founder and long-term president of the Philippine Nurses Association of United Kingdom (PNA-UK), an organisation established to support and protect the welfare of Filipino healthcare professionals working in the National Health Service (NHS) and wider UK healthcare sectors.[2] He is also the first Filipino appointed to sit on the Fitness to Practise (FtP) panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).[3]

Early life and nursing career

[edit]

Duque was educated in the Philippines, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). In 1999, he migrated to the United Kingdom to work as a registered nurse, initially working in the accident and emergency department of a London hospital. Like many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) of his generation, his early years in the UK involved navigating long-distance family separation before his family eventually joined him in London.[4]

Nursing career and professional advocacy

[edit]

Following his arrival in the United Kingdom in 1999, Duque established a clinical footprint as an independent nurse practitioner in London. He became an active voice during critical transitional periods for international workers in the British healthcare sector. During the mid-2000s and early 2010s, as UK immigration guidelines shifted and altered the career trajectories of overseas healthcare staff, Duque leveraged his leadership position at the Philippine Nurses Association of the United Kingdom (PNA-UK) to petition for stable career pathways and ethical treatment within the National Health Service (NHS).[1]

His insights regarding the sociological and economic impact of these policy shifts on the global Filipino diaspora have been preserved in independent academic texts and migration research reports published under international bodies like UNESCO.[5] Additionally, his expertise on workforce integration and the challenges faced by overseas nursing staff led to an appointment on the Special Advisory Board for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) research project examining the global care industry, in collaboration with academic researchers at Lancaster University.[6]

In his regulatory capacity, Duque remains a prominent figure as the only professional of Filipino descent serving on the Fitness to Practise (FtP) panels for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).[3][2] In this role, he contributes to national tribunal decisions governing professional nursing standards and licence regulation across the United Kingdom.[3]

Community leadership and PNA-UK

[edit]

In 2003, Duque founded the Philippine Nurses Association of United Kingdom (PNA-UK), a registered charity created to serve as a vital support network for newly arrived and settled Filipino nurses.[1] Under his stewardship, the association developed workshops and training modules addressing immigration protocols, fair labour practice, career advancement, and professional integration within the NHS.[7] He has also frequently spoken out in the British press against xenophobia and the negative portrayal of overseas nursing staff.[8]

Duque also served as a volunteer and coordinator during major humanitarian crises, such as organising relief distribution through the Philippine Embassy in London following Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013. For his extensive community development work, Duque and his family were named the recipients of the Jollibee-Coca-Cola Global Pinoy Family of the Year Award at the 3rd Jollibee Family Value Awards in October 2013.[4] In July 2021, during Duque's leadership tenure, the PNA-UK and the wider community of Filipino healthcare workers received an official message of gratitude from Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of the British public, acknowledging the exceptional contribution of Filipino nurses within the National Health Service (NHS).[9]

Regulatory roles and advocacy

[edit]

Duque acts as an independent nurse practitioner and serves as a panel member for the Fitness to Practise panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the regulatory body that oversees nursing and midwifery licences across the UK.[3] He is noted as the first Filipino professional to sit on this national regulatory board.[2]

Literary work and metaphysical design

[edit]

Beyond his medical career, Duque operates as a literary artist, author, and designer specialising in transpersonal psychology, metaphysics, and paranormal documentation. In 1997, he joined the Spirit Questors (SQ), a prominent psychic and paranormal research group founded in the Philippines by novelist and clinical therapist Tony Pérez.[10] Within the organisation, Duque progressed from an apprentice to a senior facilitator, handling structural operations as the group’s quest reporter, official records keeper, and website coordinator. During this period, he was initiated under the moniker "Manlalakbay" as a second-degree member of Luna y Sol—an esoteric coven developed from the Spirit Questors framework—and served as a workshop coordinator for the affiliated group, Brothers of the Peach Garden.[11][12]

In 2001, Duque served as a co-author alongside Pérez and Dion Michael Fernandez on the anthology Stories of the Moon: More Adventures of the Spirit Questors, published by Anvil Publishing.[13][14] The text explored transpersonal psychology and documented the group's investigations, with the fourth section of the volume explicitly featuring quest narratives channelled by Duque.[13][15]

In 2005, Duque published Nurses Little Green Book Pocket Reference, a clinical text focused on healthcare operations.[16] Developed as a rapid-consultation clinical guide, the pocketbook was designed for international and newly arrived NHS nurses navigating emergency medicine, local drug calculation protocols, and bedside care guidelines.[16]

Duque later expanded his publishing footprint as an editor and producer, overseeing the publication of the 2012 motivational and psychological guide Power of Balance, authored by Clint M. Mendoza.[17] The text utilized structural frameworks to address themes of career achievement, mental wellness, and personal mindfulness.[17]

In October 2010, Duque authored the standalone volume Quests Beyond Existence, published under Primoris Okulto.[18] The book compiled metaphysical accounts, spiritual quests, and transpersonal experiences aimed at cultivating a better understanding of human and non-human relationships.

Duque expanded his metaphysical design work into cartomancy in 2026 with the development of the Meridians of Destiny Tarot Deck.[19] Developed as a tool for psychological integration and shadow work, the deck features a non-traditional cosmological framework structured along a vertical axis of Cosmos, Archetype, Element, and Human categories.[19] The deck also introduced dual-sided "Human Condition Cards" designed to track psychological archetypes such as clarity, delusion, action, and inaction.[20]

Humanitarian work and disaster response

[edit]

In addition to his work with the PNA-UK, Duque is the founder and lead instructor of the Disaster Emergency Response and Relief Team (DERRT) Global, operating under the UK Filipino Disaster Emergency Response Group.[21] The humanitarian group coordinates emergency logistics, medical care, and crisis updates during natural disasters, expanding on the relief initiatives he directed through the Philippine Embassy in London following Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.[4][21]

Cultural initiatives

[edit]

Outside of his clinical and metaphysical pursuits, Duque has been a contributor to the expatriate arts community in London, serving as the President of Filsnappers, an association of Filipino photographic hobbyists and visual artists in the United Kingdom. In October 2013, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy, Duque co-curated and opened a public photographic exhibition documenting the Filipino diaspora's perspective of British cultural landscapes. The artistic initiative was launched in tandem with Philippine Ambassador Enrique Manalo as a feature of the annual Philippine-British Friendship Day celebrations.[22]

Freemasonry

[edit]

Duque has been an active member of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) within the Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London for over two decades. He served as the Lodge Secretary for Kennington Lodge No. 1381, where he was credited with leading the group of brother in the lodge survival and in managing the operations and post-pandemic recovery of the historic lodge. For his service to London Freemasonry, he was awarded the distinction of Senior London Grand Rank (SLGR) in 2025.[23] Duque is also affiliated with Con Amore Lodge No. 3633, which has grown to become a prominent hub for the Filipino masonic community in London.[24][25]

Other ventures

[edit]

In addition to his clinical and regulatory work, Duque is an author, writing literature focused on spirituality and metaphysics.[26]

Contributions, literary work, and civic engagement

[edit]

Beyond his primary clinical practice, Duque has contributed to healthcare policy, transpersonal psychology literature, international disaster relief, and London civic organizations.

Healthcare regulation and policy reform

[edit]

As the first professional of Filipino descent appointed to the Fitness to Practise (FtP) panels of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Duque contributes to national tribunal decisions governing professional nursing standards and licence regulation across the United Kingdom.[3][2] Through his leadership roles with the PNA-UK, he has focused on combating the exploitation of overseas nurses by predatory recruitment agencies, establishing structural safeguards and pastoral support networks for international workers.[1] Following public controversies regarding the treatment of overseas medical staff, Duque acted as an active spokesperson in the British press, advocating for the clinical integrity and workplace safety of international nurses within the National Health Service (NHS).[8] Alongside nursing colleagues, he co-developed the Overseas Nursing Program (ONP), a curriculum used to onboard and integrate thousands of incoming Filipino healthcare professionals into the UK health sector.

Transpersonal psychology and literature

[edit]

In 1997, Duque joined the Spirit Questors (SQ), a psychic and paranormal research group founded in the Philippines by novelist and clinical therapist Tony Pérez.[10] Within the organisation, he progressed to a senior facilitator, serving as the group’s quest reporter, official records keeper, and website coordinator. During this period, he was initiated under the moniker "Manlalakbay" as a second-degree member of Luna y Sol—an esoteric coven stemming from the SQ framework—and coordinated workshops for the affiliated Brothers of the Peach Garden.[12]

In 2001, Duque served as a co-author alongside Pérez and Dion Michael Fernandez on the anthology Stories of the Moon: More Adventures of the Spirit Questors (Anvil Publishing), with the fourth section of the volume explicitly featuring quest narratives channelled by Duque.[13][15] In October 2010, he authored the standalone volume Quests Beyond Existence (Primoris Okulto), compiling transpersonal experiences to explore human and non-human spiritual relationships.[18] He later published the clinical text Nurses Little Green Book Pocket Reference (2005) and acted as editor for the motivational guide Power of Balance (2012).[16][17] In 2026, he designed the Meridians of Destiny Tarot Deck, a tool for psychological integration and shadow work featuring a non-traditional cosmological framework structured along a vertical axis of Cosmos, Archetype, Element, and Human categories.[19][20]

Humanitarian relief and cultural initiatives

[edit]

Following the devastation of Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in 2013, Duque coordinated localized collection drives and medical distribution frameworks through the Philippine Embassy in London.[4] For these efforts, his family received the Jollibee-Coca-Cola Global Pinoy Family of the Year Award.[4] He later formalised these initiatives by founding the Disaster Emergency Response and Relief Team (DERRT) Global, a volunteer network providing first-aid advice and logistics during natural disasters in Southeast Asia.[21] Outside of humanitarian work, Duque served as President of Filsnappers, an association of UK-based Filipino photographers, co-curating a public landscape exhibition with Ambassador Enrique Manalo during the 2013 Philippine-British Friendship Day.[22]
