‘’‘Metropolitan Paul Minas’’’, born ‘’‘Paul Dikran Boghos Minas’’’ (Egyptian Arabic: بولس ديكران بوغوس ميناس; Greek: Παύλος Ντικράν Μπόγος Μηνάς); 24 January 1935 – 26 November 1995) was an Eastern Orthodox hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. He served as Metropolitan of the Metropolis of Hermopolis (Ermoupolis), based in Tanta, Egypt[1]. Metropolitan Paul Minas emerged as a much-needed spiritual leader and advocate for the Arabic-speaking minority within Egypt’s Greek Orthodox Christian flock, providing pastoral guidance and strengthening the community’s presence and continuity within the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Early life

[edit]

Paul Dikran Boghos Minas was born on 24 January 1935 in Mansoura, Kingdom of Egypt, to an Egyptian-born Armenian father, Dikran Boghos Minas, and a Syrian mother, Alice Gibran Hosni, originally from Homs, Syria.

His paternal family originally bore the surname Minassian and immigrated to Egypt from Persia in the early 19th century.

According to family tradition, Paul was named after his paternal grandfather, Boghos Minas. Boghos is the Armenian form of the name Paul.

Education

[edit]

Paul received his law degree from the University of Heliopolis in the late 1950s.

After completing his law studies, Paul left the field altogether and was received into the Greek Orthodox Church in 1960, a move that initially upset his parents, as Paul was their only son who could carry the family name.

He subsequently studied at the Theological School of Halki in Turkey, graduating in 1965. A 2018 academic study of the history of the Halki Theological School lists ‘’‘Παύλος Μηνάς Μιόγος Ντικράν’’’ among the students associated with the institution[2]

Ecclesiastical career

[edit]

Paul became a hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa.

He became Metropolitan of the Holy Archdiocese of Hermopolis (Ermoupolis) of the Greek Orthodox Church, under the Patriarchate of Alexandria. His episcopal tenure is given as beginning on 28 November 1968 and ending with his death in 1995[3].

A 1969 issue of the Orthodox periodical ‘‘Majallat al-Nur’’ included an article titled “المتروبوليت بولس ميناس أول مطران عربي في الكرسي الاسكندري منذ 40 عاماً” (“Metropolitan Paul Minas, the first Arab metropolitan on the Alexandrian see in 40 years”), published on page 107[4].

Ministry in Egypt

[edit]

Metropolitan Paul was a leading figure among the Arabic-speaking Greek Orthodox Christians in Egypt. Prior to Metropolitan Paul, the Arabic-speaking minority of Egypt’s Greek Orthodox Christians received little to no representation among the hierarchy of the church in Egypt, which was heavily saturated by ethnic Greeks, similarly to the situation among the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch in the Levant.

During his tenure, the Metropolis of Hermopolis was based in Tanta and served the Greek Orthodox community in the region.

His tenure as Metropolitan of Hermopolis (Tanta) has continued to be commemorated by the Greek Orthodox community in Egypt[5].

Death

[edit]

Paul died in Cairo, Egypt, on 26 November 1995.

[6]His death and episcopal ministry have subsequently been commemorated by the Greek Orthodox Church in Egypt, including memorial services in Tanta[7].
