Memo Paris is a French niche perfume house founded in 2007 by Clara Molloy and John Molloy.[3][4] Based in Paris, the company produces fragrances organised around the theme of travel, with individual scents inspired by particular places.[3][5] The brand's name is derived from the word "memory."[6] Memo Paris is part of Memo International, a Geneva-based company that also owns the fragrance houses Floraïku and Hermetica.[7] Memo Paris was sold in around 200 points of sale across 45 countries in 2019,[7] growing to 58 countries by 2023.[1]

History

[edit]

Founding

[edit]

Clara Molloy was born and raised in Paris to parents of Spanish (Catalan) origin.[8][1] She studied literature at the Sorbonne and worked as a journalist and editor before writing "22 Perfumers: A Creative Process," a book profiling perfumers, which led her toward the fragrance industry.[4][1][3] John Molloy, from County Tipperary, Ireland, worked in fashion retail management, including at Kenzo (LVMH), before joining L'Oréal; he left L'Oréal in 2012 to run Memo Paris full-time.[3][9] The couple founded Memo Paris in 2007, with Clara Molloy as creative director and John Molloy overseeing management.[7] The brand's fragrances debuted at Le Bon Marché and the Paris concept store Colette before expanding to Harvey Nichols in London.[8][5]

Growth and expansion

[edit]

In 2013, Memo Paris launched Irish Leather, a fragrance referencing John Molloy's childhood around horses and saddlery in Tipperary; the fragrance debuted at an event at the Irish embassy in Paris and was later stocked at Brown Thomas in Ireland.[10] At the time, the house's range comprised around a dozen fragrances sold at retailers in Paris and London.[9]

To mark its tenth anniversary in 2017, the house launched the fragrance Eau de Memo and opened new stores in Moscow and Dubai, bringing its retail presence to more than 100 points of sale worldwide.[5] Trade coverage placed the brand's growth within a wider wave of acquisitions of independent perfume houses by larger luxury groups, including LVMH's purchase of Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Estée Lauder's acquisitions of Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, Le Labo and Kilian.[5][1]

By 2018, Memo Paris was the bestselling fragrance house at Harvey Nichols and among the top-selling in the United Arab Emirates, according to The Guardian.[8][5]

The Molloys subsequently founded two further fragrance houses, Floraïku and Hermetica, operating the three brands together as Memo International.[7] Trade press in 2019 estimated Memo International's group retail revenue at close to €100 million, with about 30 staff in Geneva and roughly 80 employees in total across the group, alongside some 600 sales staff at points of sale worldwide.[7] Memo Paris alone employed around 30 staff between Paris and Geneva in 2023.[1] By 2025, the group employed around 75 people, 33 of them in Geneva and the rest in the United Kingdom, France and the United States.[2]

Recent activity

[edit]

In February 2024, Memo Paris launched an Asia-exclusive collection of smaller-format fragrances.[11] In 2026, Memo Paris introduced a Harrods-exclusive fragrance collaboration with designer Giles Deacon.[12]

Fragrances

[edit]

Memo Paris organises its fragrances into themed collections associated with specific places, which the house describes as "travel notes."[3] One such line, Cuirs Nomades ("nomadic leathers"), combines leather accords with materials linked to different destinations.[4] Fragrances in this collection include Irish Leather, inspired by John Molloy's childhood in Ireland.[9][10][13]

Most Memo Paris fragrances are composed by outside perfumers commissioned by the house. The perfumer Aliénor Massenet has created around twenty fragrances for Memo Paris, including much of the Cuirs Nomades collection.[14] Clara Molloy has said she sought out women perfumers from the brand's founding in 2007, at a time when the profession was dominated by men.[14]

Other fragrances include Lalibela, the house's first release, inspired by the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia;[13] Eau de Memo, launched for the brand's tenth anniversary in 2017;[5] and a fragrance inspired by Abu Dhabi, launched in 2024 and developed with perfumer Mylène Arlan.[15] In 2020 the house released Odéon, inspired by the Paris neighbourhood of the same name; a limited edition illustrated by French artist Jean Jullien was released in 2025.[16][13]

Reception

[edit]

In 2019, Memo Paris's Moroccan Leather fragrance received a FiFi Award, the fragrance industry's award for perfume; perfumer Aliénor Massenet had previously received a FiFi Award for the house's Shams Oud.[7][5] In 2026, the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia included Memo Paris's Cap Camarat among ten fragrances selected for its "Consagración de la Primavera" perfume awards.[17]
