Yashpal Singh Mor SM (known as Yash Mor) is a retired Major General of the Indian Army. He was commissioned into the 1 Guards in 1985[1] and retired in September 2020.[2] He was awarded the Sena Medal for counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and served as the first General Officer Commanding of the Ladakh Sub Area.[2] After retirement he became CEO of the Save the Himalayas Foundation and is active as a public speaker and writer.[3]

Early life and education

Mor is a third-generation Army officer. He was born and raised in Baas village in Hisar district, Haryana.[4] He studied at the Rashtriya Military School, Bangalore, and later trained at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.[4] He holds a doctorate,[1] and is an alumnus of the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies in Washington, D.C.[2]

Military career

Mor passed out of the Indian Military Academy in June 1985[4] and was commissioned into the 1 Guards.[1] He served as a United Nations peacekeeper in Mozambique from 1993 to 1994.[1] He has served in counter-terrorism roles in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir,[2] including postings in Poonch and Jammu.[3]

He later commanded 1 Guards and an independent armoured brigade, served as a directing staff (instructor) at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and worked in the Strategic Planning Group of the Directorate General of Perspective Planning at Army Headquarters.[2]

He became the first General Officer Commanding of the Ladakh Sub Area (Leh), a dedicated administrative headquarters supporting troops of XIV Corps that was set up following the Kargil Review Committee recommendations.[2] One report places his tenure as GOC in Ladakh in 2018–19.[3] Before superannuating in September 2020, he was Chief of Staff of a corps in the desert sector.[2][4]

Post-retirement activities

After retiring, Mor became the first CEO of the Save the Himalayas Foundation, founded by Buddhist monk Bhikkhu Sanghasena, and says he works in the role pro bono.[3][4] While posted in Ladakh he also worked with conservation groups on the protection of the black-necked crane and the brown bear.[3] He speaks publicly on leadership and motivation and has written articles for Scroll.in.[3][5] He is also an avid cyclist.[3]
