Meininger Hotels is a hotel chain headquartered in Berlin, Germany. Founded in 1999, it operates hotels in the budget segment in European countries. As of 2026, the company operates 36 hotels.[2]
History
[edit]Meininger Hotels originated from a hostel opened in 1999 in Berlin-Schöneberg by three founders. The first property offered shared rooms with communal bathrooms for about 200 guests and was used mainly by school groups, students and backpackers.[3][4][5]
Further properties opened in Berlin in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, the company opened a location in Munich; from then on the hotels also offered private rooms. According to the company, the guests included families, small groups and business travellers.[5]
During the 2000s, the company expanded to other German cities and later to other European markets.[3] Between 2010 and 2013, the British travel group Holidaybreak acquired the company in several stages from its founders.[4][6][7]
Company structure
[edit]Meininger Hotels is part of Holidaybreak Ltd, which in turn is owned by Ares Management.[8]
In the 2024/25 financial year, the company reported revenue of around €200 million and an average hotel occupancy of almost 80 per cent.[1] The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €74.76 in 2023 and €82.96 in 2024.[9][8]
The company operates hotels and hostels in the budget accommodation segment in Europe. The accommodation includes private rooms and multi-bed rooms with shared facilities. On average, about half of the rooms are multi-bed rooms, with approximately 3.5 beds per room. Facilities usually include common areas such as guest kitchens and lounges, and the properties are mostly located in city centres.[2][10]
As of 2026, the company runs 36 hotels, of which 15 are in Germany, including six in Berlin.[2][10]
