History
[edit]MediFind was founded on Rare Disease Day, February 29, 2020, by Patrick Howie.[1] Rare Revolution Magazine reported that Howie was motivated to create the platform after his brother was diagnosed with a rare cancer, and the family spent hundreds of hours researching specialists and treatment options without a systematic way to find leading experts.[4] Philadelphia Magazine reported that the company was designed to help patients find specialists and clinical trials, with a focus on rare diseases, and that MediFind expanded its database in 2020 to include COVID-19-related clinical trials and physician information.[1]
Platform
[edit]Philadelphia Magazine described the platform as compiling medical research and providing condition summaries written for non-specialist readers, alongside tools for finding physicians and clinical trials.[1] Rare Revolution Magazine reported that MediFind uses proprietary algorithms to identify physicians based on factors including research output, patient volume, and standing among peers.[2] Healthcare IT Today reported that the platform uses algorithms and data analysis to evaluate medical information and surface physicians with documented expertise in specific conditions.[5]
In April 2026, MediFind received the DiMe Seal from the Digital Medicine Society, an independent nonprofit that advances the safe and effective use of digital health technologies. According to the company, MediFind was the first doctor directory to receive the certification.[6]
Acquisition by Phreesia
[edit]Phreesia announced in July 2023 that it had acquired MediFind.[3] Delaware Business Now reported that Howie founded MediFind after his brother's rare cancer diagnosis and that following the acquisition Howie joined Phreesia as a Vice President of Product Management.[7] A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission stated that the transaction was structured as a merger in which Comsort, Inc., operating as MediFind, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Phreesia, with the deal closing on June 30, 2023.[8] The filing reported total consideration of approximately $9 million in cash and stock.[8]
