Maxwell Social is a private membership club in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Founded in 2020 by David Litwak, Kyle Chaning-Pierce, and Joelle Fuchs,[1] the club emerged as part of a broader wave of private social clubs that expanded in New York City during the late 2010s and early 2020s.[2][3]
The club takes its name from Elsa Maxwell, the American columnist and hostess known for organizing society gatherings attended by political, artistic, and aristocratic figures during the early twentieth century.[4] According to published interviews with the founders, the club emphasizes member-led social programming and recurring community events.[5]
Maxwell Social occupies two floors at 135 Watts Street in the historic Fleming Smith Warehouse, a Romanesque Revival and Neo-Flemish style warehouse building completed in 1891 and designed by architect Stephen Decatur Hatch.[6] The club’s interiors include murals by Gracie Studio inspired by the life of Elsa Maxwell.[4]
Unlike many contemporary private clubs in New York City, Maxwell Social does not operate permanent spa or athletic facilities.[5] Its programming instead centers on member-organized dinners, discussions, cultural events, and private gatherings.[2]
