Matthew Dooley (born 1984) is an English cartoonist and author.

Career

Dooley is best known for his graphic novel, Flake, published by Jonathan Cape in April 2020. It won the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic fiction in 2020 being the first graphic novel to do so.^[1]

Flake was nominated for an Eisner award in 2021 in the category of Best Grapic Album - New.^[2]^[3]

Dooley’s second graphic novel was Aristotle’s Cuttlefish published in 2025 by Jonathan Cape.^[4]

Both Flake and Aristotle’s Cuttlefish are based in the fictional town of Dobbiston which Dooley says is based on “a sillier version of the West Lancashire town of Ormskirk, where I grew up”.^[5]

Flake has been published in French (Glace) ^[6] as has Aristotle’s Cuttlefish (Aristote Ou Presque). The latter has also been published in Polish.

Dooley also has several self published titles along with a selection of works with Joe Stone. His early work appeared in anthologies such as Dirty Rotten Comics and Offlife.^[7] Many of his self published comics feature himself ^[8]^[9] recognisable for his “flame red hair, glasses and a dense beard”.^[10]

Dooley won the Observer/Cape/Comica graphic short story prize in 2016 with his entry titled Colin Turnbull: A Tall Story, which told the tale of a man’s ambition to win Lancashire’s Tallest Milkman competition.^[11]

He is currently working on his next graphic novel titled Daphne and Laurel. ^[12]

Personal life

Dooley was born in Liverpool and grew up in Ormskirk in Lancashire.^[18] He now lives in South London.^[19] His favourite food is sausages. He enjoys crosswords, pub quizzes, crazy golf^[20] and plays lawn bowls.^[21]
