Cook moved to Northern California in 1984. He went to Humboldt State University to major in piano studies.

Cook started recording albums in 1992. His first tape was a holiday album called ''The Sounding Joy''. He made three more cassette tapes in the 1990s: ''Redwood Box'' (1994), ''Storm Warning'' (1995), and ''1997'' (1997). In 2003, Arianna Recording remastered these old tape songs and put them on two CDs called ''Summertime'' and ''The Rose and Other Love Songs''.
