Mat Mowbray

[edit]

Mathew Peter Mowbray (born February 1980) is a New Zealand entrepreneur. Together with his brother Nick and sister Anna, co-founded ZURU Group, which spans toys and consumer goods.

Early life

[edit]

Mowbray grew up in Cambridge, New Zealand.[1] At age 12, he won the New Zealand science fair with a hot air balloon kit, which his brother Nick subsequently sold door-to-door.[2] Mowbray left university at 19 to establish a small manufacturing operation on his family's farm in Tokoroa, a small town in New Zealand's North Island.[3]

ZURU

[edit]

In 2003, Mowbray (aged 24) and his younger brother Nick (aged 18) formally established ZURU.[3] In 2003, the brothers relocated to Hong Kong, using a $20,000 loan from their parents to purchase an injection moulding machine and establish a manufacturing factory in Guangzhou, China.[4] The early years of ZURU were marked by significant challenges, with the brothers operating with little business experience, no knowledge of Mandarin, and unaware of intellectual property laws. In 2005, their sister Anna joined the business. Five years later, ZURU's big break came through Robo Fish, an electronic plastic toy that simulated movement in water. The product generated approximately $100 million in annual sales, transforming the company's commercial prospects.[5]

ZURU has grown significantly from its origins as a toy company, expanding into fast-moving consumer goods through ZURU Edge, with a portfolio of brands including MONDAY Haircare and Rascal. Mowbray has since turned its attention to property development through ZURU Tech, leveraging innovative manufacturing technology and software to disrupt the construction industry.[6]
