Martin White (artist)
[edit]Martin White (born 1978) is an Australian visual artist and writer based in Norway.[1][2]A former theatre director, White's work has been presented internationally in institutions such as Kunstnernes Hus,[3] Unge Kunstneres Samfund,[1] Oslo Kunstforening, WIELS,[2] and Project Anywhere.[4]
White is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts[3]. He is an artistic research PhD fellow at the Art Academy of the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. [5]
Work
[edit]White works with large-scale and complex historical archives.[2] He has made work that has created an archive of the operations of Norways's oldest art institution,[6] has distributed an archive of psychiatric experimentation,[7] and collated an archive of Norway's solidarity with Namibia, Norwegian whaling in Namibia and a Norwegian missionary in Namibia.[8] He is one of the most preeminent artists in Norway to be working with archival information as a material.[9]
His acclaimed work Big Science has brought to light the experiments of Dr. C. W. Sem-Jacobsen, a Norwegian Neurophysiologist who from 1956 - 1977 experimented on psychiatric patients at Gaustad Hospital in Oslo, without the patients' consent.[10][11][12][13]
White has taught at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and Nordic Black Xchange.
White's has published essays on Ukichiro Nakaya, Fujiko Nakaya and Experiments in Art and Technology at the 1970 Osaka World Exposition, the artist Anna Sofie Mathiasen,[14] and the interrelationship between Norway and Namibia.[15]
White worked as a theatre director in Melbourne, Australia, where he directed several plays for independent company Red Stitch Actor's Theatre between 2002 - 2005.[16][17][18] White developed and directed the original performance work The Suicide Show in 2009 which premiered at the Arts Centre, Melbourne in 2009.[19]
