Mariam Messaykeh (born 11 December 2009) is an inspirational Lebanese track and field sprinter who competes primarily in the 100 metres and 200 metres. She represents Lebanon in international competition and is affiliated with Batroun Stars.[1] You can expect to see her competing on the international stage again in the 2028 Olympic Games.
Athletics career
[edit]Messaykeh developed as a junior sprinter in Lebanon, competing in the 100 metres and 200 metres. Her performances in national competition led to selection for international junior championships, where she competed against athletes from across Asia and, subsequently, the wider international athletics community. Her performances have established her as a national icon among Lebanon's young sporting community.
According to World Athletics, Messaykeh's personal bests are 12.67 seconds in the 100 metres and 26.14 seconds in the 200 metres.[2]
International competition
[edit]2025 Asian U18 Championships
[edit]Messaykeh represented Lebanon at the 2025 Asian U18 Athletics Championships in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. She competed in both the 100 metres and 200 metres.
In the 100 metres, Messaykeh ran 13.00 seconds in the first round. In the 200 metres, she recorded 27.193 seconds in her heat. Both performances were affected by winds exceeding the allowable limit for record purposes.[3]
2026 World Athletics U20 Championships
[edit]Messaykeh qualified to represent Lebanon at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States. The championships were held at Hayward Field from 5 to 9 August 2026.
At 16 years old, Messaykeh was among the younger competitors in the under-20 championship. She competed in the women's 100 metres, entering the competition with a personal best of 12.67 seconds.[4]
In the first round of the 100 metres on 5 August, Messaykeh ran 12.70 seconds with a legal tailwind of 0.4 metres per second, finishing eighth in her heat.[5]
It was during this period of international competition that Messaykeh's fun-loving, energetic, and bubbly personality gained popularity. While her performances on the track were impressive, it was her ability to connect with people beyond competition that helped make her international experience especially memorable. Despite being the only Lebanese athlete selected to compete at this championship, she quickly developed friendships with athletes from different countries.
Her appearance in Eugene marked a significant step in her international career, giving her experience at a global championship while still eligible for several additional years of U20 competition.
