Mann und Weib: Ihre Beziehungen zueinander und zum Kulturleben der Gegenwart (Man and Woman: Their Relations to Each Other and to Contemporary Cultural Life) is a German-language illustrated work on the relationships between men and women, edited by Robby Kossmann and Julius Weiß and published by the Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft in 1908.[1]
The three-volume work brought together contributions by numerous writers and specialists, including Iwan Bloch, Albert Moll, Georg Buschan, Wilhelm Bölsche, Lily Braun, Willy Hellpach and others.[2] Its subjects included human anatomy, sexual development, sexual life, emotions and psychology, marriage, family life and the social and cultural relations between the sexes.[3]
Publication and structure
[edit]The work was published in Stuttgart, Berlin and Leipzig by the Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft. The complete edition consists of three volumes and contains numerous illustrations and art plates.[1]
| Volume | Title | Year | Extent |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Der Mann.
The three volumes contain 434, 672 and 497 numbered pages respectively, for a combined total of 1,603 numbered pages, in addition to preliminary matter. A surviving complete set is described as containing 979 illustrations in the text and 48 art plates.[4]
The first volume deals separately with the man and the woman, including physical constitution, sexual life, intellectual and emotional life, and stages of life. The second examines the relations between men and women, while the third considers their relationship to contemporary culture.[1]
Contributors
[edit]The work was a collaborative publication rather than a single-author treatise. Contributors included medical writers, psychologists, ethnographers, sociologists and writers. Among them were Iwan Bloch, Albert Moll, Georg Buschan, Wilhelm Bölsche, Lily Braun, Max Haberlandt, Willy Hellpach, Josef Kohler and Emil Zuckerkandl.[4]
The work also includes contributions by Albert Moll on male reproductive activity. A modern bibliography of Moll's writings identifies his contribution, "Zeugungs- und Fortpflanzungstätigkeit des Mannes", in volume I, pages 52–61.[5]
Later significance
[edit]Mann und Weib is of interest today as a document in the history of early twentieth-century sexology, medicine and the study of gender and sexuality. Its contributors included several figures who subsequently became associated with the emerging German-language literature on sexology and sexual science.[5]
The work is also useful for studying how contemporary writers combined medical, psychological, anthropological and social approaches to questions concerning men, women, sexuality and marriage. Its contents should, however, be understood in the intellectual context of the early twentieth century rather than as a representation of current scientific knowledge.[1]
Digital editions
[edit]The complete three-volume work has been digitized by the Wellcome Collection, which catalogs all three volumes and provides online access to them.[1] Individual volumes are also recorded in other national and research-library catalogues, including the Russian National Electronic Library.[6]
