Magdy A. Bayoumi is an Egyptian-American electrical and computer engineer.[1][2] He is a professor and head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.[3]
His research includes integrated circuit design, low-power electronics, digital signal processing architectures and computer arithmetic.[2][4] He became an IEEE Fellow in 1999 and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors in 2025.[4][5]
Education and academic career
[edit]Bayoumi received bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Cairo University and a master's degree in computer engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his doctorate in electrical engineering at the University of Windsor in 1984.[6]
He joined the faculty of the Center for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1985, and has served as the center's director from 1997 to 2013 and as head of the Department of Computer Science from 2000 to 2011.[6]
Research
[edit]Bayoumi has worked on integrated circuits for digital devices, including designs intended to reduce power consumption in mobile phones and computers.[2] His research has also included sensing technologies, sensor nodes, data processing and energy-management applications.[7]
Bayoumi served as vice president for technical activities of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 1998 and 1999, and as its vice president for conferences in 2006 and 2007.[8] He was the founding chair of the society's Circuits and Systems for Communications Technical Committee, serving from 2000 to 2006.[9]
Honors
[edit]Bayoumi was elevated to IEEE Fellow in 1999 in recognition of his contributions to application-specific digital-signal-processing architectures and computer arithmetic.[4] He received the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society's Education Award in 2003 and its Meritorious Service Award in 2009.[7]
In 2025, he was named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.[5][7]
