Madhurendra Kumar (born 5 September 1994) is an Indian sand artist, sculptor, and social campaigner from Bihar. He is known for creating large-scale sand sculptures on themes such as environmental protection, climate change, wildlife conservation, sanitation, and world peace, often incorporating Buddhist and Indian cultural themes into his work. His sand art has been showcased in more than 25 countries, and he holds more than 70 national and international awards.

Early life

Madhurendra Kumar was born and raised in Bijbani village, situated on the banks of the Aruna River in East Champaran district, Bihar, into an economically disadvantaged farming family. As a child, he began grazing goats at the age of five and later sold curd door-to-door to support his family. He worked as a night guard to fund his education, and during college, he often slept in corridors as he could not afford hostel fees.

For his formal artistic training, Kumar earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Sculpture from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi.

Career and art style

Kumar's family initially opposed his pursuit of art, and at one point he was forced out of the house for it. What helped sustain him during this period was encouragement from former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Kumar began his sand art practice near river banks, sculpting shapes in sand from a young age, and has continued to work with natural materials such as clay and stone alongside sand.

Kumar's sculptures have frequently focused on Buddhist themes; since 1999, he has created a series of sand sculptures depicting the life of Gautama Buddha, including a 50th sculpture in the series that earned him recognition in the UN Book of World Records. His work has also incorporated themes tied to government initiatives, including a sand sculpture highlighting the "Har Ghar Ganga Jal" project and the Gaya Rubber Dam.

In 2022, Kumar's sand art decorated the Tourism Department's main pavilion at the Sonpur Mela in Bihar, where he created sculptures based on the mythological theme of Gaj-Graha Yuddha.

Exhibitions and international participation

Kumar has participated in cultural festivals organised by the Government of Bihar, and has contributed sand sculptures for state-organised events, for which he receives compensation along with sand supplied by the district administration. His sand art has addressed themes such as environmental protection, climate change, single-use plastic, wildlife conservation, sanitation, de-addiction, women's empowerment, education, anti-terrorism, patriotism, and world peace, both at domestic and international events. According to Kumar, a single international event typically earns him over ₹2 lakh, including expenses.

Kumar's sand art has been showcased in more than 25 countries, including Nepal, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan, Laos, Indonesia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In July 2025, Kumar created a sand sculpture as part of the welcome preparations during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bihar.

Awards and recognition Kumar's work gained wider recognition after receiving encouragement from former President of India A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. His 2023 sand sculpture incorporating the "Har Ghar Ganga Jal" initiative and the Gaya Rubber Dam project earned him special recognition from the Tourism Department and the Gaya district administration. His 50th sand sculpture in a series depicting the life of Gautama Buddha, created for a Buddhist Festival, earned him recognition in the UN Book of World Records, complete with a certificate, memento, and medal. His name also features in the Asia Book of World Records, and he holds more than 70 national and international awards in total. In February 2026, Kumar was honoured with the Danveer Karna National Award at the Ang Angika Sahitya Mahotsav in Bhagalpur, held to mark World Mother Language Day.

Kumar has also been recognised by the London Book of World Records for creating more than 5,000 unique sand artworks, becoming the first sand artist to receive this distinction, and was honoured at the British Parliament in London.
