Madeleine Schwartz is an American writer and editor. She won the 2019 European Press Prize Public Discourse Award for her reporting on Atlanticism from Germany's perspective.[1][2]
She is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Dial, an online magazine of international reporting and writing.[3]
Early Life
[edit]Schwartz graduated from Harvard College in 2012[4], and then studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford where she received a master's degree in ancient history[5]. During this time, she studied papyrology with Dirk Obbink, about which experience she later wrote.[6]
Career
[edit]Schwartz worked as an assistant to Robert Silvers at The New York Review of Books until the latter's death in 2017.[7] In 2020, she founded The Ballot[8], an online magazine aiming at covering every major election taking place in 2020 in the world, except for the American ones.[9][10][11] In 2023, she then founded The Dial, drawing from the Transcendentalist publication of the same name.[12][13]
Her reporting is mostly focused on international affairs,[14][1][15] immigration,[16] women's rights, [17][18] or art and art history.[19][20][21] She has also written several essays of literary criticism: she was one of the first critics writing about Literature Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux for an American audience,[22] and has also written extensively about Marie NDiaye.[23][24]
Her work has notably appeared in the London Review of Books,[25] Book Marks,[26] The New Yorker,[27] The Paris Review,[24] The New York Times,[28][29][30] The Guardian,[1][31] and The New York Review of Books.[32][33][34]
