The MBDA Crossbow, stylised by its manufacturer as CROSSBOW and also known as the Crossbow One Way Effector (Heavy) or OWE (H), is a British ground-launched, turbojet-powered land-attack cruise missile under development by MBDA UK. It is intended to provide a comparatively inexpensive, mass-producible deep-strike capability against static and high-value targets.[2][1]

MBDA publicly unveiled Crossbow at the Defence and Security Equipment International exhibition in London in September 2025. The company states that the missile has a range exceeding 800 km (500 mi) and can carry a modular payload of up to 300 kg (660 lb).[3]

Crossbow was subsequently identified as MBDA's entry in Project Brakestop, a UK Ministry of Defence programme to develop low-cost, rapidly producible long-range strike weapons initially intended for Ukraine.[4][5] Initial firings took place in December 2025 and February 2026. As of July 2026, the system remained under development, with further testing planned in the United Kingdom and overseas.[6][7]

Development

Project Brakestop

The Ministry of Defence launched Project Brakestop through its Taskforce Kindred organisation in November 2024, in response to a Ukrainian requirement for additional long-range strike weapons. The programme sought a ground-launched weapon with a range of at least 500 km (310 mi), a speed exceeding 600 km/h (370 mph) and the ability to carry a warhead weighing at least 225 kg (496 lb).[7]

The programme also established a target unit cost of approximately £400,000, excluding the warhead, and required the winning design to be capable of reaching a production rate of at least 20 weapons per month shortly after a production order. These figures were programme requirements and were not a confirmed production cost or manufacturing rate for Crossbow itself.[7]

The Ministry of Defence received 27 initial proposals. Six companies were each awarded contracts worth approximately £5 million to design and construct prototypes within seven months. By December 2025, the field had been reduced to MBDA UK, MGI Engineering and Rotron Aerospace, whose respective systems were tested at the Ministry of Defence's Hebrides Range in Scotland.[7]

Crossbow's association with Brakestop was not publicly confirmed when the missile was first displayed in September 2025. At that time, MBDA declined to discuss the programme directly, while stating that the weapon could be adapted to domestic or export requirements.[2] In June 2026, reporting on the Brakestop trials identified Crossbow as MBDA's competing design.[4][5]

Design and testing

MBDA said that Crossbow progressed from initial design to a demonstration-ready configuration during 2025. The system was developed using a combination of military and commercial off-the-shelf components, with MBDA acting as the weapon-system integrator.[3]

FlightGlobal reported that participants in the development included Czech turbojet manufacturer PBS, Norwegian ammunition manufacturer Nammo, British drone developer Modini and aerospace engineering company Marshall.[2]

MBDA announced in June 2026 that Crossbow had completed initial firings in December 2025 and February 2026.[6] The UK government subsequently confirmed that the three remaining Brakestop designs had been flight-tested at the Hebrides Range.[7]

In June 2026, each of the three remaining suppliers received a follow-on contract worth approximately £15 million. The second phase required each supplier to manufacture 15 improved effectors, together with associated launchers and support vehicles. Further trials were planned in the United Kingdom and Ukraine.[7]

Design

Crossbow is a subsonic, turbojet-powered missile with a stated launch mass of approximately 750 kg (1,650 lb). It is 5.3 m (17 ft) long, has a diameter of 350 mm (14 in) and deploys wings spanning approximately 3 m (9.8 ft).[1][2]

The missile is intended to attack fixed infrastructure and other high-value static targets at ranges exceeding 800 km (500 mi). Its modular payload compartment can accommodate kinetic warheads or non-kinetic payloads weighing up to 300 kg (660 lb).[8]

Guidance

The guidance system combines satellite navigation, inertial navigation, image-based navigation and a terminal sensor.[1] MBDA states that its image-based navigation system uses artificial intelligence to compare imagery during flight, allowing the missile to continue navigating when satellite-navigation signals are jammed, degraded or unavailable.[8]

FlightGlobal reported that the image-recognition navigation technology was developed in cooperation with the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.[2] The Financial Times reported that Crossbow used an internally developed visual-navigation system and had been designed without United States components, reflecting the Brakestop programme's requirement for the United Kingdom to retain control over export and operational permissions.[4]

Launcher

The proposed launcher uses a mobile vehicle with a 20-foot ISO-compatible mounting arrangement. A vehicle can carry either one or two launch pods using standard container locks.[1][8] Images released by MBDA show the missile using a rocket-assisted launch before transitioning to turbojet-powered flight.

Production strategy

Crossbow was designed around a modular architecture and the use of commercially available or modified off-the-shelf components. MBDA stated that this approach was intended to shorten development times, allow alternative national supply chains and permit later changes to the weapon's navigation, payload, survivability and platform interfaces.[3]

At the system's unveiling, MBDA said that production at scale could begin during 2026 if a customer placed an order.[2] As of July 2026, no operational production order or selection of Crossbow as the final Brakestop design had been publicly announced.
