MATE Internet and Mobile is an Australian telecommunications provider that offers NBN internet and mobile services. The company is based in Wetherill Park, in Western Sydney, and its services operate on the Telstra Wholesale network.[1]
MATE was founded in 2015 and began trading in 2016, during the rollout of the National Broadband Network.[2]
History
[edit]MATE was founded in 2015 by twin brothers David and Mark Fazio, together with their cousin Jonathan Dundovic. It began operating in April 2016 from a residential property in Smithfield, Western Sydney. The launch coincided with the rollout of the National Broadband Network.[2]
In 2018, MATE was placed second in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Australia awards, with reported revenue growth of 3,703 per cent over three years.[3][4] The company reported that its revenue grew from about A$500,000 to about A$30 million between 2016 and 2019.[4] By 2022, it reported revenue of about A$100 million and employed 83 staff, of whom 19 were members of the founding family.[5] The company reported that its sales roughly doubled from March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]
In January 2023, MATE began offering 5G mobile services in major Australian cities.[6]
Services
[edit]MATE offers NBN internet plans across several speed tiers via a direct connection to the National Broadband Network (nbn), fixed wireless services to eligible premises, and SIM-only mobile plans.[7][6] As of 2019, Its plans are sold without lock-in contracts.[4] Mobile services run on the Telstra Wholesale network.[8]
The company provides its customer support from Western Sydney. MATE has cited its Australian-based support as a point of difference from competitors that use overseas call centres.[9]
Sponsorships and marketing
[edit]MATE has used Australian footballers in its marketing, including Mathew Ryan (from 2019) and Sam Kerr. It has also sponsored sports teams, including the Central Coast Mariners, Western Sydney Wanderers, Perth Wildcats, and Perth Lynx.[2]
Recognition
[edit]MATE has received several industry and customer-service awards. In 2021, Canstar Blue rated MATE highest for overall NBN satisfaction[10] The company received Customer Service Team of the Year awards at the Australian Service Excellence Awards in 2019 and 2020, and an International Service Excellence Award from the Customer Service Institute of Australia in 2020.[11][12]
