Luna Pan (credited on some productions as Luna Yue Pan) is an Australian composer for film, television, games and advertising, based in Sydney.[1][2] She received a Sports Emmy Award nomination at the 47th Sports Emmy Awards in 2026 as associate composer of the HBO Max documentary Surviving Ohio State,[3][4] composed the scores for Vee Shi's short film Jia (2023)[5] and feature Time and Tide, winner of the Documentary Australia Award at the 2026 Sydney Film Festival,[6][7] and wrote the soundtrack for the Sydney New Year's Eve 2024 midnight fireworks.[8][9] She won the Screen Composition category of the APRA AMCOS Professional Development Awards in 2023[10] and was nominated for Emerging Screen Composer of the Year at the 2024 APRA AMCOS / AGSC Screen Music Awards.[2][11]
Early life and education
[edit]Pan began classical piano at the age of five and studied piano and music theory for a decade.[12][1] She completed a Bachelor of Composition and Music Production at the Australian Institute of Music on a scholarship, graduating in 2018,[13] and holds a Master of Arts in Orchestration for Film, Games and Television from the University of Chichester.[1]
Career
[edit]Pan has written music for feature films, documentaries, television and advertising. APRA AMCOS, announcing her 2024 nomination, described her as having created music for television programmes including The Block, Bondi Rescue and Bluey.[2][11] She is a contributing composer to the production-music library Melodie, with placements including Bondi Rescue, Ambulance Australia, Love It or List It Australia and Everyday Gourmet.[12]
She composed the score for Isabel Darling's SBS documentary The Carnival, for which she received a gold award for best original score at the LIT Talent Awards.[1] She was associate composer, alongside composers Thomas Rouch and Cornel Wilczek, on Surviving Ohio State (HBO Max, 2025), directed by Eva Orner; the programme was nominated for Outstanding Music Direction at the 47th Sports Emmy Awards in 2026.[3][4]
In 2023 Pan was one of four composers selected for Credit Maker, a mentorship scheme run by Screen Australia with the Australian Cinematographers Society and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers to place women and gender-diverse practitioners in head-of-department roles on scripted television; she was placed on the animated series Lego Monkie Kid under supervising composer Mitchell Stewart.[14][15]
She scored Vee Shi's short film Jia (2023), which won the AWGIE Award for short film and was nominated for Best Short Film at the 2024 AACTA Awards.[5][16] Shi engaged her again for Time and Tide, his debut feature, which premiered at Visions du Réel and won the Documentary Australia Award at the 73rd Sydney Film Festival in 2026.[6][7][17] Shi has said the film was edited without a temporary score and that Pan's music was written to "elevate the emotions the film was already able to convey".[18]
In November 2024 the City of Sydney announced Pan as composer of the midnight fireworks soundtrack for Sydney New Year's Eve 2024, a twelve-minute work combining orchestral writing with electronic styles, and described it as "the best experience I've ever had as a composer".[19]
Her concert and orchestral music has been recorded by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra in Spain and at Smecky Music Studios in Prague.[12] Her orchestral works Evolution and The Masquerade were nominated at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards in 2021 and 2022 respectively.[20][21] She is a represented (associate) artist of the Australian Music Centre, which lists her orchestral work First Light (2025).[1] She is a member of the Australian Guild of Screen Composers and the Alliance for Women Film Composers,[22][23] and in 2021 interviewed composer Helena Czajka for the Guild's Composer to Composer interview series.[22]
