Los Vampires is a 2026 horror thriller film written and directed by Craig Mitchell. Starring Henry Ian Cusick, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniela Couso, Jefferson Mays, Oscar Nuñez, and Jorge Diaz, the film presents a fictionalized account of the making of the 1931 Spanish-language version of Dracula. The story blends historical events with supernatural horror, exploring rivalry, obsession, and murder on the set of one of cinema's earliest vampire films. The film had its world premiere at the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal in July 2026.
Plot
[edit]Set in Hollywood in 1930, Los Vampires follows Luis de Ossario, a Spanish actor cast in the night production of a vampire film being shot on the same sets as its English-language counterpart. During the day, another actor portrays the same character, creating an uneasy professional rivalry between the two men. As tensions rise, a series of mysterious murders begins occurring around the studio. The increasingly blurred line between performance and reality leads Luis into a conspiracy involving ambition, superstition, and the occult, while questioning whether the darkness consuming the production exists only on screen.

Production
[edit]Writer-director Craig Mitchell conceived Los Vampires as a fictionalized reimagining of the production of the 1931 Spanish-language Dracula, which was famously filmed overnight on the same Universal Pictures sets used for the English-language version directed by Tod Browning. Rather than depicting the historical figures directly, the film uses fictional characters inspired by actors Carlos Villarías and Bela Lugosi. The film marks Henry Ian Cusick's first leading role performed primarily in Spanish.
Release
[edit]Los Vampires premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal in July 2026 as part of the festival's 30th anniversary program. Reception Prior to its premiere, the film attracted attention for its premise, with critics drawing comparisons to the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire because of its blending of horror with the fictionalized making of a classic vampire film. Early audience discussion praised the concept and period atmosphere.
