Lokantar is an online news portal in Nepal. The website publishes in the Nepali language and operates from Lalitpur.

History

The Lokantar portal was officially launched on 6 May 2016.It is a Nepali and English Language News Portal, Portal Mainly Updated From Lalitpur.It was Inagurated by Former Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi .[1][2] Dhruba Hari Adhikary became the first Editorial Director and Bimal Gautam became Editor-in-Chief.[2]

In 2021, Editor-in-Chief Gautam won the Resilient Mediapersons Award given by the Press Council Nepal.[3] In 2024, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority gave the Good Governance Award to Lokantar reporter Ajay Anuragi.[4]

Lokantar staff have occasionally participated in press freedom advocacy. The Committee to Protect Journalists interviewed Gautam in 2019 about media censorship in Nepal.[5] Later in 2024, the organization signed a joint statement with other editors protesting the arrest of Kantipur Media Group publisher Kailash Sirohiya.[6]

Lokantar covers politics, business, National, Sports and International news. The site's Nepali slogan translates to "investigation, analysis, and news" (खोज, विश्लेषण ... अनि समाचार).[7] It is categorized as a digital-native news outlet.[8]

Information published by Lokantar is used as a source in reports by non-governmental organizations. For example, the National Human Rights Commission cited Lokantar in its research on migrant workers.[9] The Freedom Forum also referenced the portal's articles in their media monitoring reports and a 2019 gender study.[10][11] Additionally, academic research on media and corruption in Nepal has analyzed the portal's coverage.[12]during the election Time most of the leader follows the lokantar for their Election Exit Poll and election Analysis matches with the exact results.
