Loading (Japanese Version) - EP is the first extended play by American singer Kat DeLuna. It was released on October 7, 2016 through Cape Republic. The project was exclusively released in Japan and is composed of five new songs released separately from the compilation Loading (2016).

Loading (Japanese Version) was promoted by the lead single "Forever" and "Waves" with the former hitting number one on the Japanese iTunes Charts.

Background

[edit]

On August 5, 2016, DeLuna released her third studio album loading. It served as a transition project before her then next album Viva Out Loud, to thank her fans for their patience.[1]

After gaining more popularity in Japan with her previous album Inside Out (2010), DeLuna and her team decided to release separately the five new songs that were close to the new sound she was aiming for her next album as an extended play for the Japanese market.

Music and lyrics

[edit]

Loading (Japanese Version) is composed of several genres including pop, R&B and dance with influences of Latin music.

The extended play opens with "Waves", a tropical-house pop song, which lyrically, uses the metaphor of waves to describe emotional and romantic attraction. The repeated imagery suggests surrendering to feelings and letting love carry you, much like the movement of the sea. When being told that it was different from her previous songs, DeLuna stated that "that's the joy of being an artist—you have to keep growing and changing."[2]

The second track, "Make Me Sweat" is a dance-pop song with Latin influences. The lyrics focus on longing for a partner's touch and the excitement of reconnecting after being apart. DeLuna said that she wasn't sure if she wanted to include this song on the record, stating that she wanted to try a new sound but not forget her Latin roots, just as she did with "Whine Up" in 2007. She developed, "when I listened to the song, I felt I understood why that combination was such a hit in 2007. It wasn't accidental—it was intentional. [...] This time, though, I wanted to make it more pop."[2]

"Forever" is a pop-dance song with electronic influences, featuring Jamaican singer Natel. Lyrically, the song is about enduring love and commitment. It centers on the idea of wanting a relationship that lasts "forever". DeLuna described the song as a glimpse of the direction she was going for the next album. "Over You", featuring Nigerian singer Yemi Alade, is a pop-R&B track with tropical influences with lyrics that see DeLuna finally detaching from someone who’s been emotionally draining. "No Another Me" is a pop-R&B track, with lyrics about independence and self-reinvention, where DeLuna sings about self-worth and refusing to be replaced in a relationship.
