Liisa Jugapuu (born 22 December 1990) is an Estonian painter whose work focuses on abstract painting.

Education

[edit]

Jugapuu studied painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts, completing her bachelor's degree in 2015 and her master's degree in 2017.

She has been a member of the Estonian Painters' Association since 2016 and the Estonian Artists Association since 2017.

Work and reception

[edit]

Jugapuu`s work is centred on abstract painting, with colour, gestural brushwork and the relationship between abstract and recognisable forms recurring in critical descriptions of her work.[1]

In a 2015 review of her first solo exhibition, Almost Honest, Merilin Mets described Jugapuu`s painting style as vigorous and noted its strong sense of colour. Mets described the paintings as ambiguous, observing that their forms transform without becoming fully recognisable.[1]

Writing about the 2022 exhibition Mother as a Feeling, Kaie Ilves described Jugapuu`s work as colourful, vigorous and spontaneous, and placed it within abstract expressionism. Ilves also noted Jugapuu`s forceful brushwork and the exhibition`s contrasts of scale, with small and miniature paintings displayed alongside large canvases and spatial elements.[2]

In a 2024 review of Jugapuu`s joint exhibition Dialogue in Colour, Liisi Kõuhkna compared Jugapuu`s paintings to blurred photographs and identified suggestions of human figures in some of the works. Discussing Someone in Tights, Kõuhkna also considered the relationship between Jugapuu`s paintings and their titles, interpreting elements of her imagery as references to intuition and the subconscious.[3]

Jugapuu has described her abstract paintings as emerging through a combination of chance and deliberate choice. In a 2025 profile accompanying her exhibition Study of Balance, she contrasted her spontaneous approach to large canvases with the longer and more considered process she uses for smaller works.[4]
