Leonid Zvavich (19 November 1945 – 16 January 2024) was a Soviet and Russian mathematics teacher and textbook author. He spent his career at Moscow School No. 67 (formerly No. 1567) where he headed the mathematics department. He received the title People’s Teacher of the Russian Federation in 2014.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
[edit]Zvavich was born in Moscow and was the son of the historian Isaac Zvavich[1][4] and Irina Zvavich. He graduated from School No. 67 in 1964 and began working there in 1965, while studying at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. He graduated from the institute’s mathematics department in 1969.[1][5]
Teaching and publications
[edit]At School No. 67, Zvavich taught classes specializing in mathematics.[5] From 1970, he helped develop curricula and teaching materials for schools and classes offering advanced mathematics courses. He also taught university mathematics to students at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute and supervised student teachers during their school placements.[3]
His geometry teaching emphasized visual reasoning and the connection between diagrams and proofs. A 2006 profile in Uchitelskaya Gazeta described how he taught students to draw geometric figures freehand and used models to help them understand solid geometry. With his colleague M. Chinkina, he developed materials through which students could cut out and assemble polyhedra. He also coauthored geometry textbooks for grades 10 and 11 with Evgeny Potoskuev; the accompanying materials included problem books and guidance for teachers.[4]
Zvavich wrote or coauthored more than 100 books and articles on school mathematics, teaching, and psychology.[1] His English-language publications include two chapters written with Alexander Karp for Russian Mathematics Education: Programs and Practices, edited by Karp and Bruce R. Vogeli and published by World Scientific in 2011. The chapters discuss classroom lessons and the assessment of students in Russian schools.[6]
Teacher training and professional service
[edit]Zvavich led professional development courses for mathematics teachers in Moscow and other cities across the Soviet Union and Russia.[2][3] Beginning in 1994, he worked with the educational society Alta to organize courses in Obninsk and Moscow. His school’s staff profile reported that about 60 seminars had attracted more than 2,000 teachers.[5]
In 1987, he co-founded the All-Union Association of Mathematics Teachers, which subsequently became the Russian Association of Mathematics Teachers, and was elected its vice president. He served on education ministry advisory bodies and joined the editorial board of Matematika v Shkole (Mathematics at School) in 1989.[3]
He prepared mathematics papers for school-leaving examinations. He also helped develop papers for the Unified State Examination during its early years.[7]
