Leon Mitchell (born 1981) is a British filmmaker, author and researcher. His work spans film, television, literature and psychology. He is known for creating the children's science-fiction television series The Luna Squad, directing feature films and documentaries including Lambo and Ellida, and writing fiction and non-fiction works exploring creativity, imagination and British history.[1] [2]

Mitchell is a member of BAFTA Connect and Directors UK.

Early life and education

Mitchell was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

From 1998 to 2003, Mitchell spent his teen and early adult years working as a professional performing artist and songwriter. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Mitchell served in the British Army Royal Army Medical Corps from 2003 to 2006. [11]

He later studied for an Honours degree at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford before completing postgraduate study in psychology at the University of Wolverhampton.[12] [13] [14]

Career

Music industry

Mitchell worked in music production, artist development and management. In 2013 this was discussed in Music Week in relation to his artist development, views on radio and international music.[15] [16]

His work included directing the music videos for Kele Le Roc's "Retro" and B*Witched's "Birthday". He was also involved in projects with artists such as Christian Bautista, Leon Lopez, A3, Patrick Muldoon, Mesh29, and Charlie Green. [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22]

He was professionally involved in the release of the music single "Love Got in the Way" by Leon Lopez; this entered the Official UK Charts top 75 at number 58.[23]

Mitchell worked with breast cancer charity Walk the Walk and founder Nina Barough between 2010 and 2015, contributing to the talent production of their fundraising events including The London MoonWalks, MoonWalk Scotland and SunWalk events. Performers included Aswad, Anton Du Beke and Andy Day. [24] [25] [26]

Film and television

Mitchell later transitioned further into film production and directing.

Early projects include the comedy Zombies in Tha Hood (2014) with Louis Smith.[27] [28]

The feature documentary film Lambo (2017) was subsequently released internationally.[29] [30]

Mitchell directed Ellida (2019), a feature-length adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's The Lady from the Sea.[31] [32]

Mitchell is the creator, writer, and director of The Luna Squad (2020), a children's science-fiction television series distributed via Amazon Prime Video. The series ran for one season and included 7 episodes.

The series was filmed at Fort Amherst in Kent and featured in The Week Junior and Shout magazine.[33] [34] [35] [36] [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] [42] [43] [44]

In 2021, Mitchell directed the science documentary series Explorer, which was distributed via Amazon Prime Video and presented by Brooke Fleming.[45]

In 2025 Mitchell produced The One True Empress, a historical documentary and companion novel examining the life of Empress Matilda.[46] [47] [48] [49]

Related to the project, he authored a feature on Empress Matilda for Discover Britain magazine and discussed the subject with historian Sharon Bennett Connolly on BBC Radio Berkshire.[50] [51]

Mitchell produced the first series of The Best of the Best, distributed via Amazon Prime Video.[52]

Writing

Mitchell writes fiction for children and young adults. His published works include Storm Chasers - The Mystery of Captain Saltskull, Astrohigh, Dark Dreamers, and Felicity Fire and the Forever Key.[53] [54] [55] [56] [57] [58] [59]

Mitchell co-authored Stay, Just for Another Day, the memoir of East 17 founding member John Hendy.[60] [61] [62] [63]

Research and psychology

Mitchell's research focuses on creativity, imagination and narrative psychology.

In 2026 the British Psychological Society published his article The Internal Cinema: Creativity as the Compass of the Self.[64] [65]
