Lena High School is a public high school in the village of Lena, Wisconsin, that opened in 1914. Located at 304 W Main St, Lena, WI 54139, the school is easily accessible from US Highway 141.

History

  • 1914 – The Lena School District was established following the Lena School Board’s decision to apply to the State of Wisconsin for the creation of a four-year high school. Prior to this Lena-area children were only educated through the 8th grade. After several meetings to complete the necessary documentation, the board submitted its application on September 18, 1914, along with a list of 41 eligible students to The State of Wisconsin. At that time, the school consisted of five classrooms across two stories. The original structure, built earlier, had only one story and two classrooms, but due to increasing enrollment, a second story was added in 1905 to accommodate growth.[7]
  • 1938 – The high school began to take on a form similar to its present-day layout. Through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), $70,000 in funding (equivalent to approximately $1.6 million today) was allocated for the construction of a gymnasium, an east wing expansion providing additional classrooms, and the development of the school’s first formal outdoor athletic facilities, including a track, baseball diamond, and football field. As the campus continued to expand, the original school building was eventually demolished, and no part of it remains today.[8]
  • 1963–1964 – A new gymnasium, later named the Bruce Kimball Gymnasium, was constructed and remains in use. During this period, a new wing featuring modernized classrooms was also added to accommodate the growing student population of the post–World War II “baby boomer” generation.
  • 1970–1971 – Additional smaller classrooms were constructed, while older sections of the school dating back to the 1910s and 1930s were demolished due to structural inadequacies.
  • 2003 – The school underwent its most extensive renovation since 1938, funded by a large referendum. The project included the addition of a new cafeteria with a full kitchen, a weight room, new music and chorus classrooms, a board room, updated and centralized administrative offices, and a connecting hallway linking the two main school buildings.

Notable Coaches and Athletes

Kris Young- A WBCA Hall of Fame Girls Basketball Coach recognized for her significant contributions to the school’s athletic programs. She led the Girls’ Basketball team to its first and only state championship and guided the program to five conference titles over a six-season span. As head coach of the Girls’ Track & Field team, she oversaw one of the most successful periods in the program’s history, leading the team to four consecutive conference championships. Under her leadership, the 1980 track season was highlighted by three Class C gold medal victories in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 4x400-meter relay events.[9][10]

Sarah Meyer (Gard)- A WBCA Hall of Fame athlete and the school’s all-time leading scorer across both boys’ and girls’ basketball programs. She led her team to a second-place finish at the state tournament in 1991, following a state appearance in 1990. During her senior year, she earned First-Team All-State honors and continued her basketball career at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, where she was named to the Second-Team All-Conference during the 1994–1995 season. At the time of her graduation, her career total of 2,176 points ranked second all-time in the state.[11]

Bruce Kimball: He coached the Boys’ Basketball team to its first WIAA State Tournament appearance in 1945 and played a key role in developing the foundation for the wide range of athletic programs offered at Lena High School today. Throughout his tenure, he served as head coach or contributed to the establishment of several boys’ sports programs. Under his leadership, the Football team captured conference championships in 1943, 1944, and 1945, while the Boys’ Basketball team earned conference titles in 1944 and 1945. He also guided the Boys’ Track and Field team to consecutive conference championships in 1946 and 1947. In recognition of his lasting impact, the school’s main gymnasium bears his name to this day.

Rob Huberty: A standout multi-sport athlete from the Lena High School Class of 2007, he captured the Division 3 state title in the shot put with a throw of 56 feet, 4½ inches—a mark that remains the Lena High School record. Huberty continued his athletic career at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he was part of two NCAA Division II football national championship teams and contributed to an overall program record of 52–5 during his tenure. At the time of his graduation, his 18.5 career sacks ranked among the top five in school history, and he recorded more than 200 tackles. He currently serves as the Defensive Coordinator for the St. Norbert College football program. In commemoration of his accomplishments his college jersey sits in a display case among the trophy cases at Lena High. [12][13][circular reference]

Eva Brooks: A distinguished three-sport athlete from the Class of 2025, she is a three-time state qualifier in the high jump, earning first-, second-, and eleventh-place finishes during her career. She also holds the Lena High School record in the event. In volleyball, she is a two-time First Team All-Conference selection and a regional champion. On the basketball court, she is a two-time M&O Conference Player of the Year[14]and ranks second on the school’s all-time scoring list. During her junior season, she helped lead her team to the state championship game, recording 23 points and 14 rebounds in the state semifinal. She also set the Division 5 state tournament single-game rebound record with 19. After averaging a career-high 19.8 points per game during her junior season, she committed to continue her basketball career at Winona State University.[15][16]

Taylor Whiting: A standout wrestler from the Class of 2026, she transferred from Oconto Falls High School after her freshman year and a state championship in the 107lb weight class as a freshman. She has since continued to excel at the national level and is currently ranked as the No. 1 wrestler in the country in the 115lb weight class. Throughout her career, she has played a key role in promoting and expanding girls’ participation in wrestlingnot only in the school but in the state. Whiting is pursuing the goal of becoming the first girls’ wrestler in state history to win four consecutive state championships and has committed to the University of Iowa to continue her athletic career.[17]

Athletics

The school belongs to the WIAA and competes in a variety of sports across Division 5 and belongs to the Marinette & Oconto Conference athletic conference along with other area schools.

Conference History

The Wildacats are going on their 99th year as a part of the Marinette & Oconto (M & O) Conferenceafter joining in 1927.[18] They were one of the 7 founding teams of the conference and have been a member ever since.

Football Conference History

The Lena High School football program began competing in the Marinette & Oconto Conference (M&O) in 1937, the first year the conference officially sanctioned the sport. The team remained independent within the M&O until 2002, marking a long period of stability before a series of significant changes reshaped the program.

In 2003, Lena formed a co-op team with St. Thomas Aquinas Academy (STAA) of Marinette, creating the Lena/STAA Titans. The Titans competed in 11-player football within the M&O Conference until 2014, when declining enrollment and the statewide growth of 8-player football prompted a transition to the 8-player format. The team joined the Great 8–North Conference, where they competed for three seasons and captured a conference championship in 2016.[19]

Following that success, the Titans became members of the MONLPC Football Conference—an organization combining the Marinette & Oconto, Northern Lakes, and Packerland Conferences. In 2020, the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) implemented a biannual football-only conference realignment plan[20] designed to maintain competitive balance. Under this plan, the Titans played in the Lakeland–West Conference for the 2020 season before rejoining the MONLPC–East Conference in 2021, where they went on to win the conference title.

A subsequent WIAA realignment placed the Lena/STAA Titans in the Peninsula Conference, a league originally active on the Door Peninsula from 1933 to 1970. The Titans finished as conference runners-up in 2022 and claimed the school’s 10th conference championship in 2023. The conference was renamed the Across the Bay Conference in 2024, with the Titans remaining members. They repeated as conference champions in 2025 after another second-place finish in 2024.[21]

Over this period, the Titans achieved five consecutive playoff appearances, compiled a 25–2 conference record and a 37–6 overall record[22], back-to-back Sectional Championships, and never finished lower than second place in conference standings. These accomplishments led the WIAA to move the program to the more competitive Northeast 8-Player Football Conference for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. [23][24]

Rams or Wildcats? This is what a runoff election decided on November 15, 1940. The Wildcat mascot has remained the official symbol for Lena High School ever since.
