Laura Britney Havener is an American experimental nuclear physicist and assistant professor of physics at Yale University, where she is a member of the Wright Laboratory.[1] Her research focuses on studying quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using high-energy particle colliders, with an emphasis on jets and jet substructure as probes of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP).[2] She is a member of the ALICE, STAR, and ePIC collaborations.[2]
Education and career
[edit]Havener is originally from High Point, North Carolina.[3] She received her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics from Columbia University in 2018.[1][4]
After completing her doctorate, Havener joined Yale University as a postdoctoral researcher in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Group (RHIG), later becoming an associate research scientist.[4] She was appointed assistant professor of physics at Yale in July 2023.[4][5]
Research
[edit]Havener's research uses high-energy heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to study the quark–gluon plasma, a state of matter in which quarks and gluons are deconfined.[3] She specializes in using jet substructure techniques — observables that probe the internal structure of jets — to investigate how jets lose energy and undergo structural modifications as they traverse the QGP, a phenomenon known as jet quenching.[2]
ALICE
[edit]Within the ALICE experiment at the LHC, Havener has served as convener of the Jets and Hard Photons Physics Working Group and currently serves on the ALICE Editorial Board.[2] Her measurements include studies of jet splittings in Pb–Pb and pp collisions using Soft Drop grooming and Lund plane techniques, which probe the QCD splitting phase space and search for medium-induced modifications to the parton shower.[6][7] She presented an experimental overview of jet modifications in the QGP at the Quark Matter 2023 conference.[8]
STAR and ePIC
[edit]Havener is also a member of the STAR collaboration at RHIC and the ePIC collaboration, which is developing the detector for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory.[2][9]
Awards
[edit]- 2025 – Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (shared with the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb collaborations at the LHC), for testing the Standard Model and exploring physics beyond it[10]
