Lasy (often stylized as LASY) is an educational creative building block system, developed in 1977 by the German engineer Peter Larws. The name is an acronym for "Larws System". The system is characterized by specialized building blocks that differ from classic studded blocks and are primarily designed to promote technical understanding and creativity in educational institutions such as kindergartens and schools.[1]

History

The Lasy system was invented in the late 1970s by Peter Larws, whose goal was to create a construction material specifically tailored to didactic requirements. In contrast to toys designed primarily for the private consumer market, Lasy targeted the institutional education market (preschools, Occupational therapy) right from the start.[2]

Production and distribution originally took place in Germany and Switzerland. After the turn of the millennium, the trademark rights and production molds were partially transferred. Today, the products are available through Swiss distributors, among others, while in Asia, particularly in Taiwan, compatible systems (e.g., by the company Lepao) have been further developed and produced.[3]

Several components of the system were patented, initially the H-block in 1971[4] followed by a figure,[5] the A-block,[6] as well as the plate[7] and the wheel[8] in the 1980s.

The central feature of the Lasy system is a departure from the pure stacking principle of classic building blocks (such as Lego). Instead, the system uses a combination of plug-in connections that enable construction in all three spatial dimensions.

The most important elements are:

  • H-blocks: H-shaped blocks that allow lateral and vertical connections.[4]
  • A-blocks: Rounded blocks for roof constructions or cladding.[6]
  • Tubes and axles: Round elements that serve both as static connections and as mechanical axles for wheels.
  • Wheels and plates: Supplementary elements for vehicle construction and static foundations.[8][7]

A special feature of the system is the precise fit of round and square parts. Round tubes fit perfectly into the square openings of the H-blocks, allowing for high flexibility in construction.

Sizes

The system is offered in three primary size classes, all based on the metric system:

  • Lasy Maxi: The basic blocks measure 8 × 4 × 2 cm. This size is intended for smaller children (from approx. 3 years old), as it places fewer demands on fine motor skills.
  • Lasy Midi: The blocks are exactly half the size (4 × 2 × 1 cm) and are aimed at older children (from approx. 6 years old) for more detailed models.[2]
  • Lasy Mini: The blocks are exactly a quarter of the size (2 × 1 × 0.5 cm) and are aimed at older children for detailed models.

Furthermore, there is also a less common "Lasy Jumbo":

  • Lasy Jumbo: The blocks are exactly twice as large as the "Maxi" (16 × 8 × 4 cm). This size can be used for oversized models. Toddlers can even sit on top of the built cars.

Educational Concept

The "Larws System" was developed with the goal of stimulating both hemispheres of the brain equally. While logical thinking is promoted through technical understanding (gear ratios, statics), free building appeals to creative areas. In newer teaching materials, the educational concept is often linked to the Theory of multiple intelligences.[1]

In educational practice, the system is often used to:

  • Train fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
  • Improve spatial awareness through 3D constructions.
  • Foster social skills through collaborative group building projects.

Distribution and Compatibility

While the original Lasy system was widespread in Europe primarily during the 1980s and 1990s, it is rarer to find in retail today and is mainly distributed through specialized educational publishers (in Switzerland, for example, by eltoys).

Due to the system's popularity, compatible replicas emerged after the expiration of certain patents. The best-known manufacturer of compatible blocks is the Taiwanese company Lepao,[3] which has expanded the system, particularly with more technically demanding components (such as motors and complex gears). These parts are generally fully compatible with original Lasy blocks.

The Lasy system has been recognized several times for its functional and educational design:

  • iF Product Design Award: In 1982, the system received the award for "Good Industrial Design" (Discipline Product) under the title Lasy-Spielzeug-Baukastensys. in 4 Baugr. (Lasy toy construction set sys. in 4 sizes).[9]
