Landslip Warning, is a warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) in conjunction with Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) when there is a high risk of many landslides as a result of persistent heavy rainfall.
The warning is meant to alert the public to take precautionary measures; aid engineers, contractors and others who are likely to suffer losses from landslides; and alert relevant government departments and organisations to take appropriate actions, such as opening of temporary shelters, search and rescue operations, closure of individual schools and relief work.[1][2]
History
[edit]In April 1977, the original two warning Amber and Red Landslip Warning introduced, however it was not public. In 1983, the warning was simplified into the current Landslip Warning and introduced to the public.[3]
In May 2024, the Special Landslip Advisory was introduced for situations when heavy rains persist in some areas but the risk of landslides in the majority of Hong Kong does not reach the Landslip Warning level, the GEO and the HKO will issue it to list out areas with a higher risk of landslides, to alert the public to the danger of landslides in those specific areas. [4]
Landslide Potential Index
[edit]The Landslide Potential Index (LPI), is derived by estimating the potential number of landslides based on rainfall intensity, rainfall location and spatial distribution of slopes in Hong Kong.[5]
The GEO will post the LPI of each intense rainstorm when the rainstorm ends (typically when the Landslip Warning is cancelled) to inform the public of its severity.[5]
