LMI Technologies (LMI) is a Canadian technology company headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia. The company designs and manufactures machine vision systems, including 3D sensors and 2D camera systems, used for industrial inline inspection and factory automation.[1][2] LMI is a subsidiary of the Dutch technology group TKH Group N.V.[3]
History
[edit]LMI Technologies was founded in 1998 by Leonard Metcalfe through the consolidation of multiple vision and sensing companies in Canada, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Metcalfe served as CEO until 2009, when he was succeeded by Terry Arden. In 2010, the company introduced the Gocator product line, focused on embedded 3D sensing systems for industrial inspection.[4]
In 2011, the company was acquired by Augusta Technologie AG, which was subsequently acquired by TKH Group in 2015.[3] Mark Radford was appointed CEO in 2020.
Acquisitions and expansion
[edit]Between 2013 and 2019, LMI Technologies completed several acquisitions, including 3D3 Solutions (Canada, 2013), GFMesstechnik (Germany, 2014), Redline CNC (Canada, 2017), and FocalSpec (Finland, 2019).[5][6][7]
In January 2021, the company acquired FringeAI, a developer of artificial intelligence for industrial inspection.[8] On August 2, 2024, parent group TKH acquired Liberty Robotics Inc. to be integrated within its vision technology portfolio alongside LMI.[9]
Products and technology

[edit]LMI Technologies manufactures the Gocator product family, consisting of 3D sensors and 2D imaging devices used for inline inspection. 3D sensors use optical measurement methods including laser triangulation and structured light (stereo fringe projection) to generate three-dimensional surface data.[4][10] The product range also includes line confocal imaging (LCI) systems used for surface and material inspection.[7]
In 2026, the company expanded the Gocator platform to include 2D imaging systems for applications such as defect detection, dimensional verification, barcode decoding, and optical character recognition (OCR).[11][12]
Software and edge computing
