Early life and education

[edit]

Lee (L.A.) Nolan was born in Toronto and raised in Brampton, Ontario, as the youngest of three siblings. His family’s roots trace back to Liverpool, England; Nolan is the first Canadian-born member of his family.

After completing his schooling in Brampton, he began an apprenticeship as a fire protection installer, later advancing to a management role as a senior estimator for a Toronto fire protection company.

While working full-time, Nolan pursued his passion for writing. He earned accreditations in Novel and Short Story Writing from Granton University and, later, once relocated to India, an Advanced Creative Writing course from Oxford University. By the early 1990s, he had begun writing fiction seriously, refining the narrative voice and dark humour that would later define his published work.

Move to India

[edit]

In 2012, Nolan emigrated to India, drawn by the country’s creative energy and diversity. He settled first in New Delhi, where he married his long-time partner, and then later relocated to Mumbai, where he began his full-time writing career by chronicling his motorcycle journeys across the subcontinent. These writings evolved into his first book, Memoirs of a Motorcycle Madman.

Career

[edit]

Following years of travel, Nolan began writing and publishing full-time. His early fiction appeared in literary and genre anthologies beginning in 2018. His writing often blends noir, horror, and psychological realism, drawing upon his background in travel, music, and the working-class culture of his Canadian roots.

Novels

[edit]
  • Memoirs of a Motorcycle Madman (2018) — a humorous collection of motorcycle travelogues.
  • Blood & Brown Sugar (2021) — an award-winning Goa-based crime thriller, which was optioned for film adaptation by Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Films.[1][2]
  • A Crate of Rags & Bones (2022) — a collection of macabre short stories exploring moral ambiguity and obsession.
  • Blood & Bombay Black (2024) — sequel to Blood & Brown Sugar, expanding on the criminal underworld introduced in the first novel.

He conducts masterclasses on Writing Horror Fiction and Building Believable Characters, emphasizing emotional authenticity and craft.

Style and themes

[edit]

Nolan’s work examines the tension between morality and survival, filtered through dark humor and psychological intensity. His stories explore guilt, longing, and transformation, set against vividly drawn backdrops ranging from Canadian suburbs to the heat and chaos of contemporary India.

Personal life

[edit]

L A. Nolan is claustrophobic, suffers from a mild case of trypophobia, and is deathly afraid of witches. He is also fairly adept at writing fiction. Nolan named his beagle Sweeney Todd and believes dogs are better than cats, Coke is better than Pepsi, and The Beatles are better than The Rolling Stones. His motorcycles, Wilhelmina and Elvira, live with him in Bombay and Sweeney often cocks a leg to them during his afternoon walk. Nolan's wife, without whom he would surely never finish anything, rewards the completion of his new manuscripts by studiously proofreading them. Sometimes she will bake him sugar cookies.
