KuwaitSat-1 is a Kuwaiti 2U CubeSat nanosatellite. Built by a student and faculty team at Kuwait University with funding from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), it was launched on January 3, 2023, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite is a technology demonstration and Earth observation mission, carrying an optical camera to image Kuwait's environment and coastal areas.[1][2]
History and development
[edit]The KuwaitSat-1 project began in 2019, led by the Physics Department of the College of Science in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Petroleum at Kuwait University.[1] The project was established to build domestic capacity in space science and engineering.[3]
Funding was provided by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).[2] The design, assembly, and testing phases involved over 1,000 hours of training for the student and research team, which included geology, engineering, and physics students.[4]
Specifications
[edit]The satellite is a 2U CubeSat with dimensions of 10 × 10 × 20 cm and a mass of 3.0 kg.[5]
The primary payload is a Gecko RGB optical imager developed by SCS Space. The camera provides color images with a ground sample distance (GSD) of approximately 39 meters from orbit.[1]
The spacecraft bus includes solar panels for power and attitude control systems (ADCS), including reaction wheels and magnetorquers, for stabilization.[5] Communications consist of a UHF downlink at 436.980 MHz using FSK LoRa protocols for telemetry, and an S-band downlink at 2208.500 MHz for transferring captured images to the ground station.[6]
Launch and orbit
[edit]KuwaitSat-1 was launched on January 3, 2023, at 14:56 UTC, from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. It was a rideshare payload on the SpaceX Transporter-6 mission, which used a Falcon 9 Block 5 launch vehicle.[7]
The satellite operates in a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of approximately 525–530 km, with an orbital inclination of 97.5° and an orbital period of 95 minutes.[5][6]
Operations
[edit]Operations are conducted from the Kuwait University National Satellite Ground Station, located at the College of Science on the Sabah Al-Salem University City campus (Shadadiya).[2]
On April 5, 2023, the satellite captured its first images. The project team published these initial images via social media on April 7, 2023, followed by a formal release on the Kuwait University portal on April 11, 2023.[8] The data is used for environmental monitoring and coastal studies.[1]
Legacy
[edit]The project trained over 40 students and researchers in satellite operations and data analysis.[1] The launch of KuwaitSat-1 led to initiatives for establishing a permanent Kuwait National Space Research Center (KNSRC) to coordinate future space activities.[3] Kuwait joined the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) in 2021,[9] and became a member of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) on March 14, 2026.[10]
