Founded in 2001 by artists and designers Elissa Ehlin and James "Jay" Leritz, the studio works in vitreous enamel on copper, furniture, lighting, architectural metalwork, and product design. During its commercial operation, Kiln Design Studio produced independent collections and designed custom work for architects, interior designers, and retail brands.

The studio's work has been exhibited at juried craft exhibitions in the United States and Japan. In 2009, it received the Best Collection award in the Accent on Design section of the New York International Gift Fair (NYIGF). Its work has also been featured in publications including The Washington Post, New York Magazine, The New York Daily News, Architectural Digest France, ELLE Decor Korea, and InStyle. History Kiln Design Studio was founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2001 by Elissa Ehlin and James "Jay" Leritz. The founders relocated to New York City to work on a hospitality design project, but following the economic disruption after the September 11 attacks, those plans were abandoned. They instead began producing handmade vitreous enamel objects and selling them from a street table on Prince Street in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood.

Sales of the studio's enamel jewelry and housewares enabled Ehlin and Leritz to establish a workshop in Brooklyn, where they designed and fabricated their own product collections. Working primarily with vitreous enamel on copper, the studio produced tableware, jewelry, lighting, and decorative objects while also undertaking commissions for architects, interior designers, and commercial clients.

In 2006 and 2007, Kiln Design Studio participated in Dining by Design, an exhibition organized by ELLE Decor in support of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). The studio collaborated with Chilewich in 2006 and KleinReid in 2007, creating installations for the exhibition.

In 2009, the studio received the Best Collection award in the juried Accent on Design division of the New York International Gift Fair for its collection of enamel jewelry, tabletop objects, and sculptural works.

In 2012, the studio introduced its first lighting collection at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). The collection included the Derrick Chandelier, developed in collaboration with Bespoke Global. In 2014, the chandelier was featured in the French edition of Architectural Digest. Design practice Kiln Design Studio designed and fabricated its work within its Brooklyn workshop. The studio combined vitreous enameling, metal spinning, fabrication, and product design to produce both independent collections and custom commissions.

Vitreous enamel on copper was used throughout the studio's work. The process involved applying finely ground glass to hand-formed copper surfaces before firing each piece through multiple kiln firings to create layered color. James Leritz constructed a custom metal-spinning lathe after domestic suppliers became difficult to source, allowing the studio to fabricate copper forms in-house.

The studio produced tableware, decorative objects, lighting, and jewelry characterized by organic forms, nesting vessels, botanical motifs, and textured enamel surfaces.

During the studio's commercial operation, Elissa Ehlin served as a color forecaster for the Color Association of the United States (CAUS). That work influenced the color palettes used in Kiln Design Studio's collections. Commercial work Alongside its independent product collections, Kiln Design Studio designed and manufactured custom work for architects, interior designers, retailers, and consumer brands. Its collections were carried by retailers including Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Takashimaya, Moss, and The Future Perfect.

The studio also produced private-label collections and commissioned objects for Calvin Klein Home, Kate Spade, and Waterworks. Throughout the 2000s, Kiln Design Studio exhibited at the New York International Gift Fair's Accent on Design section. Selected projects Kiln Design Studio undertook architectural commissions, lighting projects, and custom fabrication in addition to its retail collections.

In 2012, the studio introduced its first lighting collection at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). The collection included the Derrick Chandelier, developed in collaboration with Bespoke Global. In 2014, the chandelier was featured in the French edition of Architectural Digest.

The studio designed a custom collection for the Metropolitan Opera Shop at Lincoln Center. The collection was based on the architecture of the opera house and was produced for retail and donor programs.

Its work was later included in Lau's monograph Expressive Modern: The Interiors of Amy Lau (Monacelli Press, 2011). Exhibitions Kiln Design Studio exhibited at juried craft and design exhibitions throughout the United States during the 2000s. Its work appeared at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, the Bruce Museum Arts Festival in Greenwich, Connecticut, and exhibitions organized by the Guilford Art Center.

Three enamel works by the studio were selected for the 57th International Exhibition of the Japan Enamelling Artists Association at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. Reception In 2009, Kiln Design Studio received the Best Collection award in the juried Accent on Design division of the New York International Gift Fair.

In 2014, the Derrick Chandelier was featured in the French edition of Architectural Digest. The studio's work also appeared in ELLE Decor Korea and was included in Anita Martinez Beijer's 2018 design book Home Life Around the World, which profiled Elissa Ehlin's Brooklyn residence and included works by Kiln Design Studio.

The studio's jewelry, home furnishings, and decorative objects were also featured in The Washington Post, New York Magazine, The New York Daily News, InStyle, and The Baltimore Sun. Legacy Following the end of its retail operations in 2019, Kiln Design Studio continued to undertake select design and fabrication projects.

James Leritz continued working in architectural metal fabrication and custom fabrication projects in the New York metropolitan area.

Elissa Ehlin later entered the field of psychotherapy and has written about environmental psychology, neuroaesthetics, and the relationship between the built environment and psychological well-being.
