Keeway Group is a multinational corporation in the motorcycle and mobility industry, involved in the design, development, manufacturing, and distribution of motorcycles, scooters, electric vehicles, and bicycles. The company reports annual sales of more than 500,000 vehicles across over 100 countries.[1][2]

The group originated in 1999 in Hungary as Keeway Motor Company and has expanded through a series of brand acquisitions, manufacturing investments, and international partnerships. Its global headquarters are located near Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, with regional offices in Hungary, Italy, Spain, and the United States overseeing sales, marketing, finance, and administration.

Keeway Group holds a shareholding in Benelli Q.J., alongside Qianjiang Motorcycle Co., Ltd. (QJ Motor), and distributes Benelli motorcycles in more than 90 countries outside China, Italy, and the main European markets.[2][3] Its subsidiary MBP Moto S.r.l., based in Bologna, Italy, acquired the Morbidelli brand in April 2024; Morbidelli operates independently of QJ Motor, with no shared corporate, production, or supplier relationship.[4][5][6]

History

[edit]

Founding and early development (1999–2004)

[edit]

Keeway Motor Company was founded in 1999 in Szentendre, Hungary, initially producing entry-level motorcycles and scooters between 50cc and 250cc, combining manufacturing capacity in China with European market distribution. During its first decade of operation, the company produced more than three million units and had established a presence in over 30 European markets by 2014.[1]

Acquisition of Benelli (2005)

[edit]

In December 2005, Keeway became a shareholder of Benelli Q.J. S.r.l., the Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded in Pesaro in 1911.[7][8] Keeway took over Benelli's administration, design, and marketing functions from a headquarters in Pesaro, and the two companies began sharing design, chassis, and engine platforms, a practice that has continued since.[1][9] Benelli's sales network expanded from 10 markets in 2014 to more than 93 by 2024.

Portfolio expansion and new partnerships (2016–2022)

[edit]

During the mid-2010s, Keeway and Benelli both broadened their model ranges. Benelli's TRK 502 adventure motorcycle became one of the brand's best-selling models, and the company has been reported as the top-selling trail motorcycle brand in Italy for five consecutive years.[9] In 2021, Keeway introduced its first V-twin model, developed jointly with Benda Motorcycle of Hangzhou, which the company associates with subsequent market share gains in Italy, Spain, and Latin America.[2]

Beginning in 2022, the Keeway Motorcycles brand became one of several distinct brands operating under a reorganized Keeway Group structure.[1] That year the group also announced a distribution partnership with Benda covering 16 countries and began a rebranding initiative for Keeway.

Morbidelli acquisition (2024)

[edit]

In April 2024, Keeway Group's Bologna-based subsidiary MBP Moto S.r.l. (Moto Bologna Passioni, founded in 2021) acquired the rights to the Morbidelli brand and was renamed Morbidelli MBP.[4][5][6][10][11][12][13] The brand targets the trail/adventure, naked, custom, and scooter segments from 125cc to 1,000cc, with electric models reportedly in development, and a design and research center for the brand is being established in Bologna.

That same year, Keeway Group acquired the motorcycle manufacturing division and research team of Gaokin, which had focused on mid- and high-displacement motorcycles, and opened production facilities and design centers under the EZI HYPEVISION name.[14]

North American and Spanish operations (2023–2025)

[edit]

In late 2023, Keeway America, a subsidiary based in Frisco, Texas, became the exclusive distributor for Benelli and Keeway motorcycles in the United States and Canada; in 2025 it was named exclusive distributor for Benda Motorcycles in the same markets, with initial models including the Benda LFC700, Benelli Tornado 550, and Keeway Shiny 50.[3][15]

In 2025, Keeway Group marked 20 years of operations in Spain with the opening of new facilities intended to expand the Barcelona Design Center's role within the group's European operations.[16][17]

Corporate structure

[edit]

Keeway Group's global headquarters, located near Shanghai Hongqiao Airport in China, manages sales, marketing, finance, and administration for the group. The company is a shareholder of Benelli Q.J. S.r.l. alongside Qianjiang Motorcycle Co., Ltd. (QJ Motor) and is responsible for Benelli's distribution outside China, Italy, and the main European markets.[2] MBP Moto S.r.l., which owns the Morbidelli brand, was founded in Bologna in 2021 and operates independently of QJ Motor, without a shared manufacturing or commercial relationship.[4]

The group's subsidiaries and facilities include a European operations hub in Szentendre, Hungary (with a new Hungary business hub scheduled for completion in 2026); Benelli Q.J. S.r.l. in Pesaro, Italy, which houses the Centro Stile Benelli design and research center; MBP Moto S.r.l. in Bologna, Italy, home to the Centro Stile Morbidelli design center;[4] the Barcelona Design Center in Spain;[16][17] distribution operations in Germany, including the Saxonette brand; Keeway America in Frisco, Texas, covering North American distribution for Keeway, Benelli, and Benda;[15] and manufacturing and research facilities in China, comprising the Ziyang factory (used for 250cc-plus and large-displacement models, including most Morbidelli production), the Taizhou factory (producing sub-250cc models, with reported annual output above 1.2 million vehicles and more than 14,000 employees), and a research and development center in Chongqing focused on medium- and large-displacement models.

Brands

[edit]

Keeway

[edit]

Keeway is the group's original motorcycle brand, founded in Hungary in 1999.[1] It produces scooters (50cc–300cc), naked motorcycles, adventure bikes, and cruisers up to 350cc. The brand reports cumulative production of more than three million units and annual sales above 300,000 units across 77 countries as of 2024, with a stated goal of reaching 100 countries by 2027. Design work is carried out at research centers in Pesaro and Barcelona, with smaller-displacement models manufactured at QJ Motor's Taizhou facility.

Benelli

[edit]

Benelli is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1911 in Pesaro by the six Benelli brothers — Giuseppe, Giovanni, Filippo, Francesco, Domenico, and Antonio — and is the oldest Italian motorcycle brand still in production.[7][8][9] Under Keeway Group, Benelli has reported holding more than 35% market share in the 300cc–800cc segment in several markets and has been described as the top-selling trail motorcycle brand in Italy for five consecutive years.[9] The company has stated a goal of trail-segment leadership and expansion to more than 120 markets by 2027.

Morbidelli

[edit]

Morbidelli is an Italian brand established in Pesaro in 1968 by Giancarlo Morbidelli (1934–2020), initially as a manufacturer of racing motorcycles; its factory teams won eight world championship titles (four constructors', four riders') between 1975 and 1977.[18] MBP Moto S.r.l. acquired the brand rights in April 2024 and was renamed Morbidelli MBP, having previously presented prototypes at the 2022 EICMA show in Milan.[4][5][6][10][11][12][13][19][20] The company has stated a target of selling more than 50,000 units across over 60 countries by 2026, along with plans to return to racing through Moto2 and Moto3 sponsorships. Manufacturing is based at the Ziyang factory in western China.

Benda

[edit]

Benda is a motorcycle manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, specializing in cruiser and custom-style models. Its parent company, Hangzhou Saturn Power Technology Co., Ltd., was founded in 2016.[2] Keeway and Benda began a partnership in 2022, and since 2024–2025 Benda models have been distributed through Keeway's network in 16 countries, with Keeway America handling distribution in the United States.[15]

Ezi (EZI Electric Vehicles)

[edit]

Ezi is Keeway Group's electric vehicle brand, established in 2020. It introduced electric scooters manufactured by Keeway Group for the European market, and in 2023 the group acquired technology companies to expand its software, electronics, and AI capabilities. In 2024, the group launched the HYPEVISION product line following the opening of new production plants, with some aspects developed in collaboration with Huawei on connectivity and charging systems.[14] The stated goal is sales in more than 30 countries by 2027.

Other brands

[edit]

The group's portfolio also includes Goccia, an electric micromobility brand for urban environments; Vaun, focused on electric and alternative urban transportation; Benelli Bike (Bbike), founded in 2018 to extend the Benelli name into bicycles and e-bikes and fully integrated into Keeway Group management in 2024; Steppenwolf, a bicycle and e-bike brand associated with European cycling markets; and Saxonette, a German brand originating in motorized bicycles, now part of the group's e-bike and urban transportation offerings.

Operations

[edit]

Keeway Group manufactures vehicles using two main production bases in China: the Ziyang factory in the west, which handles 250cc-plus and large-displacement models and serves as the main manufacturing site for Morbidelli, and the Taizhou factory in the east, which produces sub-250cc models and is the primary production site for Keeway- and Benelli-branded vehicles, reporting output above 1.2 million vehicles per year and more than 14,000 employees. A research and development center in Chongqing focuses on medium- and large-displacement models, while Benda motorcycles are manufactured by Hangzhou Saturn Power Technology at two factories in Hangzhou.

The group distributes its products in more than 100 countries through a network of importers, distributors, and dealers.[1][2] In Europe, this includes Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Hungary, and Germany, with a new operations hub planned for Hungary in 2026. In North America, Keeway America distributes Keeway, Benelli, and Benda motorcycles in the United States and Canada.[15][3] In Latin America, the group operates in markets including Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Guatemala, Brazil, and Colombia, and in the Asia-Pacific region in markets including India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The group participates annually in EICMA, the Milan motorcycle show, which it uses for new model launches and distributor engagement; the 2023 edition was reported to have drawn more than 400 representatives from 66 countries.[3]

Racing heritage

[edit]

Morbidelli's racing team, founded in 1968 by Giancarlo Morbidelli, won eight world championship titles (four constructors', four riders') between 1975 and 1977. The team's first international victory came at the 1971 Czechoslovakian Grand Prix with rider Gilberto Parlotti; other riders included Paolo Pileri, Pier Paolo Bianchi, and Mario Lega.[18][4] In 2024, Morbidelli announced plans to return to racing through Moto2 and Moto3 sponsorships.

Benelli also has a history in motorcycle racing, having won the 250cc World Championship in 1950 with Dario Ambrosini and in 1969 with Kel Carruthers.[7][8]
