Karimbhai Maredia is a Professor, Associate Dean, and Director of the World Agriculture Center in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. The son of a dairy farmer, Maredia was born in a small village in Gujarat, India. He has led numerous international education, collaborative research, outreach, and capacity-building programs in food, agriculture, and natural resources. In 2003, Maredia established and has directed the World Knowledge and Technology Access Program (WorldTAP) at MSU.[1][2][3]

Education

Maredia received his B.Sc. Degree in Agriculture from the Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth in Dapoli, Maharashtra, India. Maredia received his M.S. degree from Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama, USA, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA. Maredia was an Aga Khan Foundation international scholar from 1980-1985.

Since 2017, Maredia has been serving as a member of the African Union (AU) High-Level Panel on Emerging Technologies. He has been actively engaged in empowering scholars from developing countries and promoting excellence in education globally.

In May 2009, Maredia was awarded an honorary doctorate degree (doctor honoris causa) by the University of Ricardo Palma in Peru for his contributions to international human resources development.

Career

Maredia began his career at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico, serving as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (1986–1988) and later International Scientist (1988–1989) in the Maize Program, where he worked on the development of insect- and disease-resistant maize varieties and the training of scientists from developing countries.[4]

Maredia joined Michigan State University in 1989 as a Research Associate in the Department of Entomology, where he worked on agroecology, biological control, and integrated pest management. He subsequently became Network Specialist and Assistant Professor (1993–1994) and Associate Professor and Technology Transfer Coordinator (1995–2003), coordinating international technology-transfer and biotechnology capacity-building programs for the USAID Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project (ABSP) in seven countries including Costa Rica, Egypt, Indonesia, India, Kenya, South Africa, and Morocco. He has held senior positions in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, including Senior Associate to the CANR Dean and Director of the MSU South Asia Partnership (2009–2018), Assistant Dean and Director of International Programs (2019–2025). Currently, he serves as the Associate Dean and the Director of the World Agriculture Center at Michigan State University, USA.

Maredia served as a Member of the Board of Directors of Focus Humanitarian Assistance USA, an affiliate of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) from 1997-1999. He is currently serving as member of the Board of Directors of the Somaiya Foundation in USA.[5] Maredia has traveled to more than 60 countries and disseminated knowledge, information, and new technologies to the global community. He has published 130 papers, policy briefs, book chapters, and co-edited eight books.

Honors and Awards

Maredia has received several prestigious awards at MSU, nationally and internationally, for his global work. Maredia's honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Medical Arthropodology (2022) and the International Leadership Award from the Indian Chamber of Food and Agriculture (2016). Prominent among these awards includes:

  • Borlaug CAST Communication Award (2026).[6][7][8]
  • Arthur H. Vandenberg Award for Promoting International Cooperation from the Greater Lansing United Nations Association (2025).[9]
  • Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) in Nairobi, Kenya (2023).[10]
  • Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), New Delhi, India, and was named a Pravasi Fellow of NAAS (2023).[11]
  • Distinguished Faculty Award from the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association (2021).[12]
  • International Plant Protection Award of Distinction from the International Plant Protection Congress (2019).[13]
