Kamal Khel is a Pashtun sub-clan of the Azikhel section of the Yusufzai tribe, located in Shangla District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Members of the clan primarily inhabit areas including Besham, and the village of Butyal.

Lineage

According to local genealogical records (Shajra-e-Nasab) of Mouza Butyal, the traditional lineage connects the clan to the broader Azikhel Yusufzai branch through the following lineage:

  • Yousafzai → Akuzai → Bazid → Sohail → Azikhel → Luqman → Rustam Khan → Akbar → Mandur Khan → Khan Usman → Charabikhan → Kamal Khan → Mauladar Khan → Salim Khan → Mohammed Aurang Khan → Samiullah Baba.

Key Ancestral Figures

  • Khan Usman (c. 1635): Associated with Bhaku Khan during the Yusufzai settlement. He took part in local conflicts in Shangla and Torghar before settling in Butyal and Shang Kerai.
  • Charabi Khan (Charabi Baba): Son of Khan Usman, who settled in Butyal. His shrine is in Habi Bai Shang.
  • Kamal Khan (Kamal Baba): Son of Charabi Khan and founder of the Kamal Khel lineage. Local traditions mention his search for his missing brothers and his Pashto verses from that period.

Religious and Political Leadership

  • Mohammed Aurang Baba: Known as Hindustani Baba, he studied Islamic sciences in North India before returning to Butyal. He wrote a commentary on Usul al-Shashi, titled Zubdat al-Hawashi 'ala Usul al-Shashi, and composed Pashto poetry. He took part in the First Battle of Kherai regarding local land rights. His shrine is in Butyal.
  • Samiullah Baba: Son of Mohammed Aurang Baba, he was a local Islamic scholar and elder (Mashar) in the Azikhel clan. He participated in the Second Battle of Kherai and local opposition during the British period before the establishment of the State of Swat. He is buried in Butyal.

Revenue and Administrative History

Land management records from Mouza Butyal (Alpuri Tehsil) record the transition of land administration from the historical Princely State of Swat era (under Miangul Abdul Wadud) to the modern land administration system of Pakistan following the state's integration in 1969. [3]
