Juan Kasari (born 1974) is a Finnish visual artist based in Helsinki. He works with video, photography, light and installation. His installations often combine projected colour fields, sound, constructed elements and the changing presence of natural light.[1][2]

Education and career

[edit]

Kasari studied at the Lahti Institute of Design and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2012, specialising in Time and Space Arts.[3] His work was included in the Academy's 2012 Kuvan Kevät degree exhibition.[4]

His solo exhibitions have included More Surface – More Feeling at Photographic Gallery Hippolyte in 2012 and In Transition: Absence, Isolated, Excluded at MUU Gallery in 2018.[3][2] His work has also been shown at Sinne in Helsinki, the Photographic Centre Peri in Turku and the Mältinranta Art Centre in Tampere.[5]

Kasari's four-channel video installation Absence III (2022) is in the collection of the Lappeenranta Art Museum.[6] Works from his Absence series were presented at Lux Helsinki in 2024.[7]

In 2005, Kasari was among the founders of 00130Gallery, an artist-run gallery in Helsinki. The gallery was part of a group of independent exhibition spaces established in the city during the early 2000s.[8]

Artistic practice

[edit]

Kasari's earlier work moved between photography, video, mixed-media painting and sound.[4] In his photographic works, he has combined digital processes with materials including epoxy resin and pigment.[3] His later installations use multiple video projections to produce slowly changing fields of colour. In a review of the 2018 MUU Gallery exhibition, art historian Rosa Kuosmanen described the interaction of projected primary colours, natural light and viewers moving through the gallery, and connected the works with colour theory, mysticism and theosophy.[2]
