Joseph Glasson (born 24 Jan 2006) is an Australian right-handed foil fencer. He is an accomplished junior fencer with a gold medal at the 2025 FIE Foil Junior World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.[1]
Early Life
[edit]Joseph Glasson was born in Shanghai, China on January 24, 2006. He then moved to Sydney at the end of 2018 with the rest of his family. Joseph first found out about fencing at an after-school club when he was attending an international British school in Shanghai.
When Joseph was 10, he won his first youth Chinese national event out of more than 250 competitors. As a 13-year-old in 2019, Joseph qualified for the Australian U17 Men's Foil National Team that was traveling to Toruń, Poland for World Championships. Unfortunately, he had a stress fracture in his lower back which led to him having to withdraw from the event. If he were able to compete, he would have been the youngest ever fencer at an international U17 event. During 2021, Joseph got a medal at every single national event he went to, which earned him enough points to become the number one ranked male foil fencer in every category in Australia.
Joseph was also awarded a Tier 3 Scholarship in the 2023 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program. He is only the second fencer to ever accomplish this feat.[2]
Professional Career
[edit]Joseph went on to continue his athletic career at Duke University. During his freshman season at Duke, he was able to rack up a 38-22 record during the regular season. He helped Duke upset #1 ranked Harvard 15-12 with a 2-1 record on the day. He managed a 9th place in the individual portion of ACC Championships and made his first NCAA Championship appearance. He finished 11-13 after five rounds at NCAA Championships and finished 15th after two days of competing. He earned USFCA Second-Team All Region and All-ACC Academic Team honors.[3]
Outside of his college career, he won a gold medal at the 2025 FIE Junior World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. He followed this up with a third place finish at the 2026 FIE Junior World Cup in Fujairah, UAE.
