Joseph Eng, commonly known as Joe Eng, is an American technology executive and sports owner. He has held senior technology positions at SWIFT, JetBlue Airways, TravelClick, and Billtrust.[1] Eng later entered professional sports ownership, acquiring the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association of Professional Baseball in 2023 and becoming owner of the Mississippi Mud Monsters of the Frontier League in 2024.[2][3] He is also the managing member of Pro Hockey Partners, the ownership group of the Trenton Ironhawks of the ECHL.[4]

Early life and education

Eng earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from Rutgers University and a master's degree in computer science from New York University.[1]

Before joining SWIFT, Eng held technology and management positions at Bellcore, later known as Telcordia Technologies, and Ameritech. His responsibilities at Ameritech included customer sales and support systems, network operations systems, and technology architecture.[5]

Technology career

SWIFT

Eng joined SWIFT in 1999 as chief information officer and a member of its Executive Steering Group. His responsibilities included the security, reliability, and resilience of SWIFT's services.[5]

In 2002, Institutional Investor profiled Eng and his management of SWIFT's technology operations following the bankruptcy of telecommunications provider Global Crossing. SWIFT had entered into a five-year, $300 million agreement with Global Crossing to operate and upgrade its communications infrastructure before the company filed for bankruptcy.[6]

SWIFT resumed control of the network and moved toward using multiple communications providers without experiencing a service interruption. At the time, Eng oversaw approximately 1,000 employees, representing about two-thirds of SWIFT's workforce.[6]

Eng was recognized by CIO magazine as one of its CIO 100 honorees in 2005 and again in 2006.[7] He left SWIFT in 2006.[8]

Spectrum Systems and JetBlue

After leaving SWIFT, Eng became president and chief executive officer of Spectrum Systems, an information technology consulting company. He served in the position from August 2006 until February 2008.[8]

In March 2008, JetBlue Airways appointed Eng executive vice president of systems and technology, a newly created position in which he was responsible for the airline's information systems and technology strategy and served on its executive team.[7][9] He subsequently served as JetBlue's executive vice president and chief information officer.[1]

During Eng's tenure, JetBlue implemented a new customer service and reservations system designed to make it easier for the airline to establish partnerships with other carriers and share itinerary, route, and inventory information.[10]

Eng was among Computerworld's Premier 100 IT Leaders in 2011.[10] He remained at JetBlue until September 2011.[1]

TravelClick and Billtrust

Eng served as chief information officer of TravelClick, a hospitality technology company, from July 2013 through June 2019.[1] His work there included technology and digital products for the hospitality industry.[11]

In February 2020, Eng joined financial technology company Billtrust as chief information officer.[12] His responsibilities included information technology infrastructure, security, product strategy, and product development.[12] Billtrust's public filings listed Eng as chief information officer and a member of the company's executive leadership.[1]

Eng later became Billtrust's chief technology officer. In that position, he has had responsibility for the company's technology and product operations.[13]

Sports ownership

Gary SouthShore RailCats

Eng entered professional sports ownership in 2023 when he acquired the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association of Professional Baseball from Patrick and Lindy Salvi.[2]

The Salvis had owned the Gary, Indiana-based club since 2008. The sale to Eng was announced on June 1, 2023.[2] Ballpark Digest also reported the acquisition, identifying Eng as a technology executive with Billtrust.[14]

Mississippi Mud Monsters

In September 2024, the Frontier League announced an expansion franchise for Pearl, Mississippi, with Eng as its owner.[3] The franchise was established following the departure of the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, which relocated to Columbus, Georgia, following the 2024 season.[3]

The new franchise was initially announced under the placeholder name "On Deck 2025" before being named the Mississippi Mud Monsters. The club plays at Trustmark Park and began Frontier League play in 2025.[15]

Trenton Ironhawks

Eng later entered professional ice hockey ownership through Pro Hockey Partners, LLC, a 14-member ownership group formed to return an ECHL franchise to Trenton, New Jersey. Eng serves as managing member of the ownership group.[4] He has also been described in media coverage as the majority owner or majority partner of the franchise.[16]

In September 2025, the ECHL Board of Governors approved the transfer of the controlling interest and home territory of the Utah Grizzlies franchise to Pro Hockey Partners, with the franchise relocating to Trenton following the 2025–26 season.[17] The group is led by Eng and hockey executive Bob Ohrablo.[17]

In January 2026, the franchise announced that it would be named the Trenton Ironhawks following a public name-the-team contest that received more than 2,000 submissions.[18] The Ironhawks are scheduled to begin play at CURE Insurance Arena during the 2026–27 ECHL season, with their first home game scheduled for October 24, 2026.[19]

In May 2026, the Ironhawks announced an affiliation agreement with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League.[20]
