The Jolla Phone (2026) is a smartphone produced by Jolla, a Finnish company originally founded from the remnants of Nokia's MeeGo team.[1] Announced on 5 December 2025, it is the successor to the original Jolla J1 (2013) and runs Sailfish OS 5, described by Jolla as the only commercially viable European mobile operating system.[2] The phone is marketed as an independent European Linux smartphone, with Jolla emphasising privacy, long-term software support, and the ability to run Android apps without Google services.[3] Pre-orders opened in December 2025 at a price of €499, capped at 10,000 units, with retail pricing expected at €599–699. The first batch sold out in under 48 hours, and the project surpassed its 2,000-unit production threshold within days of launch.[4]
Hardware
[edit]The device is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7100 (MT6858) processor with 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage, both from SK Hynix. Storage is expandable via microSD. The display is a 6.36" FullHD AMOLED panel at 390 ppi, protected by Gorilla Glass.[3] The camera system consists of a 50 MP primary and 13 MP ultrawide on the rear.[2] The 5,500 mAh battery is user-replaceable, continuing a Jolla design tradition from the J1. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a physical privacy switch — disabling the microphone, camera, and Bluetooth — are also included.[3] Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and 5G with dual nano-SIM and a global roaming modem configuration.[3]
The iconic The Other Half (TOH) modular accessory interface returns, featuring 7 pogo pins with I3C bus support. Full CAD specifications were made available to enable community hardware development, including 3D-printed accessories.[5]
Some features remained unconfirmed at announcement, including USB-C video output, eSIM support, and a finalised IP water resistance rating.[2]
Software
[edit]The phone ships with Sailfish OS 5, developed by Jolla in Finland. Jolla has guaranteed a minimum of five years of OS updates and availability of spare components.[4] The OS supports Android app compatibility without Google services, running Android apps in a sandboxed environment. Reviewing the device, Gadget Hacks noted that Sailfish OS treats privacy as a fundamental architectural principle, offering users real-time visibility into network connections and granular control over data flows — capabilities not available on mainstream mobile platforms.[6]
Reception
[edit]The phone attracted significant international press coverage following its December 2025 announcement. The Associated Press described it as a privacy-focused handset for Europeans.[7] The device was featured at Mobile World Congress 2026,[8] by which point pre-orders had reached the 10,000-unit cap.[9]
Release
[edit]The phone is available to customers in the EU, UK, Norway, and Switzerland, with planned expansion to further markets.[2] Mass production and first batch shipping is targeted for end of June 2026.
